Full-Length Splitboard Films

Shelter (FREE)

Release Date: 2019

Running Time: 45 mins

Whitelines Says: One of the best splitboarding movies to come out in recent years. Five friends – Leo, Thomas, Mat, Levi, and Jeremy – set off to explore the hidden valleys and remote peaks of the Alps, far from the hustle and bustle of the world’s largest ski resorts.

Travel from hut to hut, they observe, firsthand, the impact of climate change on the Alps. To mitigate the effects, a now unavoidable issue in daily life, they start by changing their approach to the mountains and how they live their passion.

For a closer look at what went on during the trip, we have a full, exclusive feature in our Whitelines Annual, Issue 121.

Roadless

Release Date: 2019

Running Time: 58 mins

Whitelines Says: What do you get when three of snowboarding’s most iconic figures meet up for a 10-day expedition in the wilds of Wyoming? One hell of a splitboard adventure, that’s what. Join Travis Rice, Bryan Iguchi and Jeremy Jones around the fire as they look back on their careers, and look forward to the adventures ahead of them.

Available to stream on RedBull TV

Higher

Release Date: 2014

Running Time: 1hr 40mins

Whitelines Says: There aren’t too many examples in film history where the final instalment of a trilogy lives up to – or even overshadows – the success of its prequels: Toy Story, Mad Max, Lord of the Rings being some, Higher being another. In Jeremy Jones’ pièce de résistance, he takes to the highest peaks in the world and records some genuinely mind-blowing first descents, that veer more towards mountaineering and alpinism than what us meer mortals would recognise as snowboarding. No, it’s not relatable, but yes, it’s essential splitboard viewing.

Available on Google Play, iTunes and Amazon

Further

Release Date: 2012

Running Time: 1hr 31mins

Whitelines Says: Back in 2012, Splitboarding was still relatively in its infancy. So, when Jeremy decided to take to the backcountry for multiple days of camping out and accessing unridden lines on foot, it was fairly groundbreaking for its time. Eight years on and few splitboarding films have managed to live up the scale and ambition set out here. Then again, it’s Jeremy, what else would you expect?

Available on Google Play, iTunes and Amazon

Deeper

Release Date: 2010

Running Time: 1hr 16mins

Whitelines Says: The one that started it all? Deeper was Jeremy Jones’ first instalment of the trilogy of films that put splitboarding on the map of every snowboarder around the world. With a focus on how no amount of mechanised transport could match the potential of exploration on foot, Deeper is a must-watch for every backcountry and splitboard enthusiast.

Available on Google Play, iTunes and Amazon

Zabardast (FREE)

Release Date: 2018

Running Time: 54mins

Whitelines Says: Yes, there might be as much skiing footage as there is snowboarding, but deal with it. We share the skinning track with them, and we usually ride with them too, and Zabardast shows how we are united in our similarities far more than we’re divided by our differences. The film documents the travel diary of a freeride expedition into the heart of the Karakoram range and a desire to ride one most beautiful mountains on the planet, standing at 5880m. Filmed over five weeks, the crew push deeper and deeper inside Pakistan, completing a self-sufficient 150 km loop, carrying everything from their tents to splitboards to solar panels. Proper adventure stuff this.

Ode To Muir

Release Date: 2018

Running Time: 58mins

Whitelines Says: About as far as you can go from the dramatic, Hollywood-esque productions levels of Higher, but by no means a less important, powerful and impressive splitboarding movie. Jeremy is joined by two-time Olympian Elena Hight as they embark on a 40-mile foot-powered expedition deep into California’s John Muir Wilderness. Adopting much more of a fly-on-the-wall approach to Jeremy’s usual format, Ode to Muir explores the challenges of winter camping, gruelling climbs up the Sierra’s biggest mountains, and aesthetic first descents with personal reflections on the importance of the natural world and those who first travelled it generations. One of our favourite split films, for sure.

Available on Google Play, iTunes and Amazon

Storm Troopers (FREE)

Release Date: 2017

Running Time: 30 mins

Whitelines Says: The name was enough to have us curious. After the legendary “Four Winds Mountains” freeride area outside Haines, Alaska was declared a No Fly Zone, Picture team athletes Léo and Thomas set out on a mission to bring the area back to life and be the first to summit the 50° Storm Trooper face by foot.

Yūgen

Release Date: 2018

Running Time: 55 mins

Whitelines Says: Three years in the making, Yūgen crosses multiple borders in a film that highlights the connections between the mountains and those of us who move through them. The film documents the journey of snowboard mountaineer Rafael Pease and his crew around the world, in a film that is as much about a spiritual journey as it is a physical one. If you’re worried it’s maybe a little to deep and profound for your liking, don’t worry – the riding and cinematography more than makes up for it.

Steps (FREE)

Release Date: 2014

Running Time: 50 mins

Whitelines Says: A splitboard documentary looking at the close connection between humans and nature… starting to see a pattern emerging here? Steps looks at how splitboarding offers riders an opportunity to pursue their passion in harmony with nature and experience the mountains in an ecologically sustainable way. Rather than the jet setting lifestyle seen in most snowboard movies, they explore the Alps at their doorstep. They travel using public transportation and climb the highest, most impressive peaks on their own before beginning their spectacular descents and jumps. But is it enough to overcome the paradox that exists between pursuing a life of snowboarding in harmony with nature?

Scan (FREE)

Release Date: 2019

Running Time: 7 mins

Whitelines Says: Making a plan is pretty much Rule #1 for any splitboarding adventure into the backcountry. Check the weather, check the snowpack, check your equipment and check yourself, before you wreck yourself. Rule #2 is the one that’s often overlooked: don’t confuse a plan with a goal. Antti Autti perfectly demonstrates this in his latest film, SCAN, as he explores familiar zones in northern Norway with no specific goal other than to splitboard as much as possible.
