Slay Days 2020 | Over and out

Who run the world? Girls.

Female snowboarders are something of a mystery – we absolutely rip on the mountain, possess a vocabulary that consists of words like ‘sick, gnarly, twat’ while wearing kitten patterned mitts and drinking prosecco straight out of the bottle. Basically, we’re absolutely badass with a hint of ladylikeness to us.

“During the last years, we’ve picked up on how rad ladies around the world have taken it upon themselves to encourage others alike to take the ladylike badassness into the park”

During the last years, we’ve picked up on how rad ladies around the world have taken it upon themselves to encourage others alike to take the ladylike badassness into the park. It’s not like we’re afraid of breaking our nails when taking a slam, it’s more the fact that the snowparks are usually very male-dominated, which may be intimidating if you’re faced with it on your own as a beginner.

Last weekend, we were invited out to Innsbruck, Austria, to take part in Slay Days, an all-girls shred event organised by Girls Are Awesome. The aim of the event is to bring a rad bunch of shrederellas together and make them feel more comfortable hitting features in the park, no matter what level you’re at. Four coaching lessons were offered to boost the confidence of the participants, while morning yoga sessions were held to pre-heat things up.

For the second edition of the event, it had been moved from Absolut Park in Flachauwinkel to the idyllic city of Innsbruck – a great call if you ask us. While we and the other 100 participants (what a turn up aye?) were busy shredding during the days, the evening activities took place in the city itself, making the post-shred program more versatile than the year before.

“However, this didn’t stop the girls, and everyone was still beyond stoked after the first session”

The event started off on Thursday, with slightly less ideal weather conditions up at Patscherkofel, the official resort to sponsor the event (the Patscherkofel snowpark in particular – big up for the guys who run it!). However, this didn’t stop the girls, and everyone was still beyond stoked after the first session. A long day up the hill was followed by a welcome dinner in Woosabi, Innsbruck, where the girls could get to know each other and their coaches. It was cool to see how girls from all around Europe had made their way to the event, alone or with friends, and shared their stories with people who had been strangers to them just a couple of hours before.

Friday started off slightly more promising as the sun was shining and there wasn’t any wind to rock us of our balance. Thanks to all the participants and the epic MC’s who kept on pushing the girls to do their best, the Friday vibes could be felt from the very start. The free lunch and endless supply of bubbly drinks might, however, have had something to do with that too.

Followed by an absolutely epic day up the hill the shenanigans continued with some more free drinks at the Blue Tomato shop in Innsbruck after which the whole lot headed over to the Metropol Cinema for an all-new Nikita film premiere and a ‘Women in Boardsports’ panel. The panel was led by our favourite Spanish chica, Alba Pardo (founder of SBES Magazine), who got to chat with three other outstanding ladies: The Scottish equivalent to Greta Thunberg, Lauren MacCallum from POW, the FWT ripper Maria Kuzma who’s putting her architectural degree to good use by creating sustainable water solutions, and Daniela Meyer, a legend amongst all women within action sports, who now works as the country manager for Burton in Switzerland. If you weren’t inspired before this, you sure as hell came out feeling like you can do anything, #girlpower.

As the weather took a turn for the worse on Saturday, the event was moved from a too windy Patscherkofel to Nordkette, another ski resort in Innsbruck. There might not have been rails and boxes to ride, but the powder lines were unreal, and everyone still made the most of the day.

A Saturday wouldn’t be a Saturday without a closing party. The post-powder day was followed by drinks at the Burton Store and an official after-party in Dachsbau, with the amazing Danish singer Ravi Kuma who got everyone pumped with her mind blowing performance.

They say that all good things must come to an end, and so it did. Sunday started off a bit slow, as Sunday’s often do, but the girls were all smiles and determined to make the most out of the last day.

A lot of bottles were popped as titles for ‘Best Style, Best Attitude or Best Progression’ were awarded at the end of every session, as well as badges for slamming, jumping, jibbing and dancing. All in all, the vibes were through the roof throughout the whole event. All the girls seemed stoked, and not just because of the new tricks they learnt but also because of all the new friends they made. It was sick to see how an event like this can bring a bunch of rad ladies together, and we can’t wait to see what the crew will put together for next year.

Big up for all the sponsors too for making this event happen!
