Salomon Trigger 2019-2020 Snowboard Bindings Review

We’ve all been there – after slightly overshooting a kicker you’ve landed to flat and been left with shockwaves rippling through your feet. It sucks. And while Salomon haven’t developed landing gear capable of guiding you to the perfect gentle touch down, they have developed Blaster baseplates – little rubber parts joining the heelcup to the baseplate. These lil’ rubber duckies are going to absorb some of the smack from a dodgy landing, slurp up some of the chatter and chunder on a choppy run and even out your ride a little.

“Padded ankle straps offer extra comfort and support when you’re cranking down”

The canted footbed has your foot sitting in the binding slightly off kilter and aligns your legs so you get maximum power efficiency as you’re riding. They’re made of an EVA foam, so they’ll be nice and cushy and comfortable for those long days on the hill.

The toe straps are super conformable round the front of your boot and are easily adjustable for the best fit. Padded ankle straps offer extra comfort and support when you’re cranking down. Aluminium buckles on both straps are a nice marriage of weight saving and durability.

Energy transfer is lightening fast thanks to the heelcup design, and you’ll get super rapid edge to edge transitions. A bit of padding round the highback keeps your calves feeling like they’re getting the VIP treatment as you razz around stomping and slashing to your heart’s content.

Tester’s Verdict

“What a nice looking tidy binding from Salomon. Simple timeless graphics. Cool feel to them. Light without feeling cheap. Easy to install on my board. Nice smooth buckle ratchet system which locked in and felt secure around my boot.

“Micro adjustments to the highback, strap and toe ramp were easy to make to get that perfect fit”

Ankle strap felt solid but had nice comfy padding in the right places. Highback was medium flex which was great for a bit of all-mountain riding and handled any type of terrain with ease. Micro adjustments to the highback, strap and toe ramp were easy to make to get that perfect fit. Pretty decent shock absorption over jumps and side hits. Handles steep terrain well. Gave me good overall board control and were super responsive. Would recommend to any rider looking for a medium flex go anywhere binding.”

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

“It’s mostly freeriders that appreciate the flexy-heelcup ‘Shadowfit’ system, so it makes sense that Salomon went a different way with the freestyle-friendly Trigger. The more conventional feeling is bang on for when you’re trying to stick stuff in the park, but at the same time these are a cut above your common-or-garden binders.

“The Trigger bindings over-deliver in the comfort and performance stakes”

Anyone who tells you they can feel the ‘Blaster Tech’ working as they ride is probably lying – just one look at the design tells you that any difference between this and a conventional binder will be subtle at best.

However, for the second year in a row I’ve found the Trigger bindings to over-deliver in the comfort and performance stakes – so whatever’s happening, it’s a good thing. For the asking price, they’re essentially in a class of their own.

So Blaster Tech may not be here to deliver our feet from evil, but the Trigger as a whole is a terrific freestyle binding that offers just the right amount of flex for all-round riding.”
