The Head Shine women’s snowboard has carried over unchanged for 2018/19 – even the graphic is the same. It’s something we’ve seen Head do before (see also: the 16/17 and 17/18 iterations of The Day), and in a way it’s admirable. If there’s no need to tinker, then why do it?

If you want to experience Head’s female-specific Libra construction, you’ll have to look further up the line. The Head Shine is less techy, and as a result comes in at a very attractive price.

“Though the build may short on fancy additives, an even-flexing all-wood core is just the thing for the intermediate rider”

The extruded base isn’t as quick as Head’s legendarily rapid sintered offering, but will do the job for all but the most speed-addicted rider – plus it’s a lot easier to maintain and repair. Though the build may short on fancy additives, an even-flexing all-wood core is actually just the thing for the intermediate rider.

As for the shape and profile, it’s got a narrower waist that makes it easier to manipulate with your feet (a definite advantage for lighter riders), while the profile offers plenty of pop thanks to a mostly-camber bend.

The Head Shine is aimed at the all-rounder that, despite still having a lot to learn, is already knocking on the door of bigger and better things.

Tester’s Verdict

Hannah Baileyneonstash.com

‘Hmm, ok I’ll give it a go!’ is what I thought about this board at first. But when you see shine on the piste you know to avoid it, and this is sort of how I felt about this board in the end.

“Perhaps for someone who prioritises moving forward rather than flowing sideways or hitting those playful angles”

It was a bit too much of a plank for me, and felt really heavy and unresponsive beneath my feet. It was my first time testing out a Head board, and although I wanted to be pleasantly surprised it ended up not being for me. You can’t win them all.

I think this board would suit a rider looking for a more traditional-feeling board,. It’s quite stiff, perhaps for someone who prioritises moving forward rather than flowing sideways or hitting those playful angles.”
