Burton Talent Scout 2018-2019 Women’s Snowboard Review

UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2019/2020 Burton Talent Scout here

The Burton Talent Scout women’s snowboard will ring a bell for anyone who was glued to the 2018 Winter Olympics. This freestyle favourite carried both Anna Gasser and Chloe Kim to big air and halfpipe gold respectively.

In every sense, this thing is built for the park. There’s the true twin shape, for one, and the camber profile that offers up unrivalled pop off jumps and edge hold in the pipe. The mid-range flex means that you don’t need to be Diana Prince to get the most out of it, though.

“After its successes in Pyeongchang, we’re expecting to see more Burton Talent Scouts than ever across the world’s parks and pipes in 2019”

Park boards are no good if they’re heavy, which is why the Burton Talent Scout has a lightweight core that varies in thickness as you travel from nose to tail. There’s no excess wood where you don’t need it, which has the added bonus of improving the flex pattern. The varying sections have also been laid out to match the duck-footed stance that’s typical of most freestyle-focused riders.

That’s not the only asymmetrical element that you’ll find hidden under the Talent Scout’s hood. Burton’s signature ‘Frostbite’ edges, which protrude out a little where the camber bend ends, are placed at slightly different points on the heel and toe edges, to more effectively match your needs in each turn.

“New for this year is a reworked triax fibreglass, made to suit lighter riders”

New for this year is a reworked triax fibreglass, made to suit lighter riders. The product of extensive testing, it’s been applied to all of Burton’s women’s board to provide female riders with a better balance of torsional stiffness that doesn’t make the deck too tough to manipulate.

To ensure a fresh-out-the-box feel, the board is given an even bend with a unique press that breaks it in, reducing the chance of it breaking for real. If you’re using this right, it’ll be dealing with some big forces, so any peace of mind on that front is welcome.

After its successes in Pyeongchang, we’re expecting to see more Burton Talent Scouts than ever across the world’s parks and pipes in 2019 – and we couldn’t be happier.

Tester’s Verdict

“Before trying this board myself I heard people saying they felt it to be slightly too stiff, which I can understand, but personally I felt that the balance between stiff and flexy was perfect.

“The balance between stiff and flexy was perfect”

The Talent Scout provides you with both a stable and fun ride. It’s maybe not the most fun board I’ve ever ridden, but I bet when you ride it often enough you learn how to make the most of it.

I rode this board in powder, on the piste and in the park, and though it worked well for all three, I definitely felt it worked best for park riding. The stability of it can best be appreciated while riding park, although the board can be used by anyone and for any kind of riding.”

The Talent Scout is always a board that gets me stoked for riding. It just effortlessly makes your day more interesting.

It’s a little bit stiffer than what I personally like riding but it’s mega poppy and great for stomping landings and locking in. It’s great in terms of speed and you always find yourself going quick even when the snow got super slushy at the end of the day.

“An awesome freestyle board with bags of versatility for charging round everywhere”

Carving was fun too; it’s quick to get on an edge and great at holding the line. I like the Talent Scout because it performs over the whole mountain from start to finish – it doesn’t pigeon-hole your riding and leave you wanting more.

An awesome freestyle board with bags of versatility for charging round everywhere.”
