Salomon Trigger 2018-2019 Snowboard Bindings Review

Lets see those fingers

UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2019/2020 Salomon Trigger here

The Salomon Trigger snowboard bindings return to the Whitelines 100 for 2018/19, purely because they’ve earned their place. The key feature here is the ‘Blaster Tech’ baseplate; unlike the flexible ‘Shadowfit’ version, Blaster features a solid chassis with the exception of two soft rubber supports on either side of the heelcup.

The idea is that it works like suspension; as you put weight on an edge (particularly the heelside), the rubber absorbs some of the vibrations before they can mess with your feet. Whether you’re stomping a landing or holding a carve, these take some of the sting out, and that’s always welcome.

One clever feature does not a winning binder make, however, but there’s plenty of other things to appreciate here. For starters, Salomon retains its ‘Easiest To Adjust’ title. For one, the disc features a system that keeps your screws in place once you’ve removed it, making everything from minor stance tweaks to full board swaps completely hassle free.

And while you may not often have a need to alter the length of your straps, when the time comes you’ll be working with the quickest, easiest system around. Just twist the screw (even with gloves on), slide to the preferred length, and tighten.

Speaking of straps, these feature a marriage of plush, chunky ankle strap and sleek, lightweight toe strap. The former puts comfort before response, which is ideal for a mid-flexing park binder such as this, while the latter conforms to any boot to keep you locked in all day.

“Just below the forward lean adjuster is a small section of material that cancels out even more unwanted chatter”

The inside of the bespoke Trigger highback is all about comfort too. There’s enough padding there to give your feet an easier ride. Also, just below the forward lean adjuster is a small section of material that cancels out even more unwanted chatter.

Effective for freestyle and far from costing the earth, the Salomon Trigger snowboard bindings remain one of the best models out there.

Tester’s Verdict

It’s mostly freeriders that appreciate the flexy-heelcup ‘Shadowfit’ system, so it makes sense that Salomon went a different way with the freestyle-friendly Trigger. The more conventional feeling is bang on for when you’re trying to stick stuff in the park, but at the same time these are a cut above your common-or-garden binders.

“The Trigger bindings over-deliver in the comfort and performance stakes”

Anyone who tells you they can feel the ‘Blaster Tech’ working as they ride is probably lying – just one look at the design tells you that any difference between this and a conventional binder will be subtle at best.

However, for the second year in a row I’ve found the Trigger bindings to over-deliver in the comfort and performance stakes – so whatever’s happening, it’s a good thing. For the asking price, they’re essentially in a class of their own.

So Blaster Tech may not be here to deliver our feet from evil, but the Trigger as a whole is a terrific freestyle binding that offers just the right amount of flex for all-round riding.”
