The first thing that appealed to us about the new Burton Instigator was the name. This is the perfect board for anyone who, to paraphrase the King Of Pop, wants to be startin’ something.

It may be an entry-level (read: beginner) snowboard, but its appeal reaches far beyond the green runs. That’s probably the best place to start, though, so we’ll begin by looking at its suitability for newbies.

The Instigator’s directional shape makes it more suitable than a true twin for committing to your first turns, but it doesn’t rule out any experiments with freestyle down the line. The flat profile is also beginner-friendly, with less risk of the nasty hang-ups caused by errant contact points.

Much like the Clash that preceded it, the Instigator has also found favour with more capable riders who want something straightforward and inexpensive in their quiver. Unless you’re an absolute hellman, there’s really very little that this can’t do.

The tech in the Burton Instigator is relatively simple, but the result is a predictable, dependable ride for the right price. Whether you’re aiming to build a solid platform, or need a fun stick for messing around in resort, this one is ideal for both.

Tester’s Verdict

Ed Blomfield – whitelines.com

“If ever you needed proof that price point proves nothing, this is it. The Instigator felt instantly alive under my feet – far better than many boards double the price.

“It’s aimed at the entry level market, but who cares when you’re having this much fun?!”

It carves rapidly from edge to edge without ever feeling twitchy, is comfortable at speed and yet soft enough for freestyle – you don’t need to work hard to pop super floaty ollies. The gently tapered shape proved excellent in powder too, making this a serious all rounder.

Paired with the new Step On bindings, it was nothing short of fantastic. OK, it’s aimed at the entry level market, but who cares when you’re having this much fun?! The only thing missing is a sintered base – stick some faster p-tex on it and Burton would have a new seasonaire favourite on their hands.”
