Union Atlas 2017-2018 Snowboard Bindings Review

Union snowboard bindings are known for being all but unbreakable, so if you’ve had issues with busted binders in the past then perhaps it’s time you game their wares a try.

The Union Atlas is still only a few years old, but has garnered a following of its own among the more aggressive riders out there. The strength-to-weight ratio is something else, proving beyond doubt that a bindings doesn’t have to be bulky to be sturdy.

“Anyone with confidence in their riding should consider the Union Atlas”

This is achieved by using lightweight metals wherever possible; you’ll find aluminium in the majority of the baseplate and heelcup, as well as magnesium in the ratchets. You can try to break that stuff, but you won’t get far – why else would the baseplate of the Union Atlas come with a lifetime warranty?

A honeycomb pattern on the inside of the ankle strap distributes pressure evenly and keeps you comfortable too. Meanwhile the structure over the top of the padding ensures you still get all the response you could ask for. The toe strap also gives you the option to lay it over the top of your foot rather than the very end, if you like.

Less hell-for-leather riders may prefer something more easy-going, but anyone with confidence in their riding should consider the Union Atlas.

Tester’s Verdict

Tom Copseyonboardmag.com

“The Atlas continues Union’s fine tradition of hassle-free strapping – unlike some other bindings out there, their stuff just works.

The slightly canted baseplate and asym highbacks felt a little unusual the first run, but by run two I’d realised it gives you a bit more precision on your heels and a touch more power through turns overall.

“The Atlas’ are best suited to riders who want to do a bit of everything”

These are mid-flexing and have a bunch of dampening, and I also thought the new ankle strap worked great – I felt ultra-locked in but my feet never felt like they wanted to murder me.

I’d say they’re best suited to riders who want to do a bit of everything – they’re the bindings of choice for Kazu and Longo for a reason…”
