If a contemporary artist was given the task of making a snowboard trailer, there’s a chance it would turn out something like this one. We’d actually go as far to say that this is the most artsy fartsy trailer we’ve seen so far this side of the New Year.
The preview of Kevin Castanheira’s representation of snowboarding in the Mid Western US, Sooner or Later, is overflowing with desaturated colours, flickering lights, filters, vignettes and a bucket load of other artistic elements. And the guys are intentionally sticking it at what people expect from a snowboard film: “SOL was never concerned with normality and conforming or adhering to any preconceived notion of what something should be or look like.”
That’s not to say the riding’s dud of course. Far from it actually. Some of the most successful urban snowboarders in recent times started out as kids grinding it out in the Mid West (Ethan Deiss is the perfect example), and these guys, some of whom we’ve come across before, some of whom we haven’t, all rip. If you can make it through all the flickering and out of focus shots, it’s worth a watch – think of it as “a visual stimulate.”
