Through The Darkness Trailer

Splitboarding through the darkness in Tromsø

Is there any feeling quite like scouting your line as you’re waiting to drop into a powder bowl? Looking for the grooves and crevasses to avoid, seeing which pillow you might be able to drop and eyeing up where you’re gonna rip a massive slash. Imagine doing it blindfolded. Mother Nature can be a wanton mistress when she chooses to be, so what better way to tempt fate than to strap on and shred in the dark? This 6 person team decided to head to Tromsø to do exactly that.

Tromsø is nestled in the Northern tip of Norway and during the winter months it plays host to a phenomenon known as ‘Polar Night’- a period where the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon at all. The whole region is shrouded in darkness with very little discernible difference between day and night. The team wanted to create a movie to convey the beauty and purity of snowboarding, and the vital role it plays in helping them get through the long dark months.

Surfing through powder under the glow of the Northern Lights must be one of the most ethereal and unforgettable experiences that it’s possible to have, and the team wanted to capture the essence of this and have the audience fully immersed in their experience.

The team consisted of Melissa Brandner, Manuela Mandl, Eirik Verlo, Krister Kopala , Hampus Cederholm and Joonas Matilla. They’re a group of avid and accomplished splitboarders, and they needed every ounce of their collective experience to negotiate unstable snowpack, icy and steep terrain and exposure. All of which would be enough a challenge, let alone doing it all in the dark, which further enhances the difficulty in being able to judge avalanche risk and adds uncertainty to the complex task of gauging how big drops are. The dangers and difficulties the team faced are all for the sweet reward that is the magic of dark riding.

The project was backed by Furberg snowboards, Spark R & D, Moonlight Mountain Gear, Julbo Eyewear, and Tromsø Kommune Norway. The full film is set to be featured at international film festivals later in the year, and we’re so amped to see how this team navigates ‘Through the Darkness’.
