Never Summer Proto HD 2015-2016 Snowboard Review

Future proof

UPDATE: See our review for the 2016/2017 Never Summer Proto Type 2 here.

The Details:

Most Never Summers are designed to be versatile, but the Never Summer Proto HD is the one the Colorado boys hold up as their true quiver killer. From park to pow and everything in between, having this under your feet should stand you in good stead.

The true twin shape is best for freestyle, and the rocker-camber base has its advantages in that respect as well. The rocker section between the feet makes it easy to lift up each end for pressing and buttering, and the camber sections under the bindings help you get the precise line for jumps and pipe. Away from the park they’ll grip hard trails while the rocker makes it easier to ride powder.

There’s far too much tech in the construction for us to list here, but one thing worth mentioning is the carbon layers that stiffen up the board from edge to edge, improving response without turning it into a plank. Also, when you’re at maximum speed the ride is smoothened by dampeners in the nose and nail that reduce vibrations.

If you’ve got the wedge for it, the Never Summer Proto HD could be your one-board solution for the next few seasons.

TESTER’S VERDICT:
Adam Hoskinsblisssnowboards.co.uk

“Having ridden this in Chamonix during the spring I can pay testament to its versatility.

It was subjected to everything from heavy slushy crud to untracked powder, bluebird fresh tracks off-piste one day and overcast rail line laps the next. I never once wished I had another board.

The price tag attached to Never Summer snowboards is a reflection of their quality – you get what you pay for – so with the extra longevity and true all-mountain performance that the Proto provides, it’s excellent value.

The Proto HD is aimed at the intermediate to advanced rider, but it’s friendly enough to be ridden by the improving beginner who will be safe in the knowledge that they won’t outgrow it.”
