CAPiTA Defenders Of Awesome 2016-2017 Snowboard Review

UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 CAPiTA Defenders Of Awesome here

The Details:

CAPiTA now makes all its boards at The Mothership, a seriously high-tech facility in the mountains of Austria. They promised big things from their purpose-built, 100% hydro-powered workshop, and now we’ll see if they can deliver. Looking at the latest iteration of the CAPiTA Defenders Of Awesome, we’d say things are looking good.

Now available in more sizes than ever, this modern classic has all-mountain appeal with a freestyle focus. The mostly-camber profile and true twin shape make it very park friendly, but by all accounts this is one to ride anywhere and everywhere.

For 2016/17, it’s been upgraded with brand new Kevlar-infused sidewalls and a high-performance, low-maintenance base – combine that with the two carbon fibre beams, poplar/beech core and unbroken steel edges, and you’ve got a bomb-proof board.

The CAPiTA Defenders Of Awesome also features one of the Mothership’s newest and most hyped technologies; a Post-Laminated Topsheet. Using a secret technique, the topsheet is bonded to the board after the press rather than during. The result is less weight, less undesireable materials, and better flex. Oh, and it makes the graphics really pop too.

In a word, awesome.

Tester’s Verdict

Adam Hoskins – Bliss Snowboards

“Over the last few seasons the DOA has been adorned with bikini-clad girls holding machine guns, semi-naked hooded chicks with axes, leather clad models… you get the idea. While this year’s model features a futuristic chick in her underwear, I actually think it’s been toned down a little.

Why focus on the graphic so much? Because a part of me dies when people don’t buy a totally amazing snowboard that’s perfect for them, purely based on the graphic. (Even more so when the reason given is that their girlfriend wouldn’t approve. Really?!) That’s the thing with the DOA – you’ll be hard pushed to find anyone that’s ridden it who doesn’t love it, but it’s amazing how many people rule it out on its looks.

CAPiTA call it ‘the go-anywhere, do-anything freestyle deck’ and I couldn’t agree more. It’s got a perfect mid-flex, as well as tons of pop and snap (which I reckon is down to the flat-kick tips and carbon fibre beams). It’s also versatile and super easy to ride – always a test favourite. Get one, your girlfriend will get over it.“
