Everyone and their mother has heard about the Burton Custom X, it’s the big dog, the mac daddy of the Burton line up. It’s a classic snowboard, reminiscent of the early days where power and aggression ruled the roost. This is an all-mountain charger that’ll absolutely blow your knickers off.

A solid full camber profile extends from tip to tail to give you the high performance that the Custom X is known for. Energetic and dominant, the camber lets you pump in and out of turns, engage the whole sidecut and move with pinpoint accuracy. There’s a reason this is the board of choice for Burton pros when the stakes are high, and they can’t afford to be let down.

The Sintered WFO base gives serious ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ kind of speed, and as such the Custom X has to be responsive no matter how fast the pace. More carbon than you can shake a stick at sits internally to ensure that when you’re going mach 10 you’ll still be able to engage and manipulate the edges, torsionally control the board, and be precise with your movements. This is point and shoot snowboarding, lock onto your target and hold onto your hat.

The Custom X packs a punch like a heavyweight champion but steps off the scales as a featherweight contender. Internally, Burton have used their DragonFly 600G core, Multizone EGD and Squeezebox technology to cut precious grams while still retaining maximum power. The wood outside both channels by the edges sits horizontally rather than vertically to allow you to manipulate power to those zones and engage the edges underfoot. With a flex pattern similar to knocking back a pack of Viagra, you’ll be glad for this torsional response when you’re trying to navigate rutted terrain. It’s these upgrades that set it apart from the standard Custom, comparatively it’s lighter, stiffer and more aggressive

Snowboarding is more about the archer than the arrow, if you’re all mouth and no trousers the Custom X will chew you up and spit you out. We’d urge less experienced riders to check out some of the more mellow options in Burton’s line up, however, if you’ve got the stones for it the Custom X is hard to beat.

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

Andrew Duthiewhitelines.com

“This board is no spring chicken, and funnily enough neither are most of the people that you see riding it regularly on the mountain (we’ll see if Red Gerard’s Olympic success does anything to change that).

“It really is light, and not without personality. Popping off a roller on this, for example, is bonkers good”

If you’ve outgrown the park, but not yet committed to the backcountry, the Custom X is a fine choice. When turned up to 11 on groomers, it’s capable of delivering a jolt of adrenalin that’s not a million miles away from dropping a cliff.

You always feel stable and in control on the Custom X, even when it’s insanely slick underfoot. At the same time it really is light, and not without personality. Popping off a roller on this, for example, is bonkers good.

Avoid the ‘Flying V’ version though – if you’re not comfortable with full camber, this isn’t the board for you anyway.”
