Bataleon’s patented Triple Base Technology will never win over every rider on the planet (we’re looking at you, corduroy-addict speed freak with vice-like bindings, a disturbing carbon fetish, and a waxing iron called Charlene). It’s great for so many things, though, so if you’ve never tried it before then the Bataleon Fun.Kink snowboard – a mellow-flexing ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously – is a great place to start.

“If you’ve never tried Triple Base Technology, the Bataleon Fun.Kink is a great place to start”

In a nutshell, a board with Triple Base Technology (aka ‘3BT’) has a concave shape at the cose and tail. A centre section of base makes contact with the snow when you’re
straightlining, but the side channels are slightly raised. ‘SideKick’, a raising of the edges at the board’s widest points, has been applied too.

This all makes for smooth, surf-like turns, and a reduced risk of dignity-stripping edge catch in the snow. You don’t have to change your riding style to master the Bataleon Fun.Kink, but you might find yourself getting a bit more adventurous with butters, presses and general spontaneity.

Bataleon has increased the Fun.Kink’s stiffness rating this year, although the change is nothing drastic. Bamboo has been removed from the core, and it’s now all poplar and paulownia.

It still has a classic camber profile, and all the benefits that come with it; more pop and better edge hold being the main ones. It’s not really stiff, but new carbon tubes along the edges allow it to carve harder and rebound better than you’d expect.

The ever-so-slightly directional shape helps in the powder, but the main advantage comes from – you guessed it – the 3BT. The hull-like nose pushes up through deep snow with ease, parting it like the Red Sea and giving you the freedom to think about your next hit rather than staying afloat.

The base may be extruded rather than sintered, but this particular variety is as tough as they come. For less upkeep you still get an impressive amount of speed – certainly more than enough for a board designed for fun, seat-of-your-pants riding. As a solid all-rounder, just about everyone should check out the Bataleon Fun.Kink – but for those whose love for snowboarding has waned a little recently, this is just the kind of thing to get you back on track.

Tester’s Verdict

“The Bataleon Fun.Kink is super fun to ride across the whole mountain. It’s one of my go-to snowboards on any test day when I wake up with a beastly hangover, as it’s super mellow and easy to ride. The Fun.Kink won’t buck you off when you get things wrong; the truly ‘catch-free’ 3BT base lets you get away with ungraceful, sloppy riding (and I have that on lock-down).

Soft enough to press and butter but with regular camber, it holds an edge at speed pretty well too. The hollow carbon rods that have been added to the upgraded core this winter have made this board noticeably lighter and poppier than before. Perfect for mellow cruising, laps through the park, side hits and newbies who want an easy-
to-ride, predictable shred-stick at a decent price.”

Trade Secrets

Dennis Dusseldorp – Director, Bataleon

“We have a lot of fun with this board and over the years it’s garnered a strong fan base, becoming more and more of a highlight for us. The Fun.Kink was the first board to feature 3 rd generation 3BT with SideKick, proving the tech worked and that we should put it on more boards. 90% of the collection has it now.”
