Why We Chose The Burton Lalik 2L Jacket and Avalon 2L Bib Pants 2022-2023 Review: A combination of new innovation with a long-time favourite.

The Big B isn’t called that for no reason. Burton doesn’t just excel when it comes to producing snowboard hardware but their soft goods too, especially outerwear, are favoured by pros, newbies, weekend warriors, snowbums, and everyone in between. In recent years, the brand has also focused on increasing carryover products, which is why we saw fit to combine the fresh for this season Lalik jacket with one of our all-time favourite bib pants, the Avalon’s.

Materials and Construction

New for this season the Lalik 2L jacket offers 10K waterproofing and 5K breathability: this is a great choice for any type of resort riding, in any kind of conditions. Designed with Burton’s living lining technology, which provides consistent temperature regulation, you’ll be able to stay warm when it’s cold and keep cool when it’s hot.

As for the Avalon bibs, Burton offers them in multiple designs. For the most technical and waterproof option, there is the Gore-Tex option, which makes the bibs highly breathable and windproof, thus perfect for backcountry adventures as well as for resort riding. This, of course, will also add to the price tag.

For the less technical options, Burton offers the bibs with a 10K/10K waterproof/breathability rating in both a hard shell and a softshell option. The softshell fabric is a more comfortable and breathable option, whilst the hardshell excels in more extreme conditions and tends to maintain the quality of the outerwear for longer. In this case, the softshell option does not feature Burton’s living lining technology, whilst the hard shells do.

On top of that, the products are bluesign approved, meaning they are certified and safe for the environment, workers and customers.

Fit and Features

With a clean style and parka cut, the Lalik jacket is designed with a regular fit that isn’t too tight or too baggy. The exact fit on the bib pants is up to the model you choose, but in general, they come in a slim fit and the legs run quite long. The upper part is also quite tight, so if you’ve got a bigger bust, you might want to choose a stretchy option just to be on the safe side. To make the bibs even more versatile, Burton also offers the hard shell 10K/10K design in a short and a tall cut.

For added breathability, the jacket features mesh-lined underarm vents. On top of that, it comes with an attached hood which can be adjusted from both the front and the back, a drawcord cinch at the waist, hand pockets and a lift-pass-pocket on the arm on the left-hand side.

Despite the differences in the fabrics, all the Avalon bibs come with a zippered drop seat making it heaps easier to use the loo. The bibs also feature a flat suspender-strap closure for a secure fit, mesh-lined inner thigh vents, microfleece-lined hand-warmer pockets, a zippered chest pocket and back pockets.

Roundup

Burton offers a classic, timeless look with the Lalik jacket and the Avalon bibs. If you take a closer look at what the ladies around you on the hill are wearing, you’ll definitely spot the Avalon bib’s on more than a handful of people, and for a good reason. If you’re looking for one go-to outfit, this is it.

Pros:

  • An all-around great outfit that won’t go out of style/li>
  • The Avalon bibs have been around for a long time, proving the point that you don’t always need to update your wardrobe with products from the new season
  • Another shout out to the Avalon pants – they’re great for ladies with long legs as the pants run so long (not to worry though, the shorter ladies can choose the short cut that Burton offers)/li>

Cons:

  • The long pants on the Avalon’s can also be seen as a con for the ladies with shorter legs. The pants are also quite tight around the tights and the breast, so make sure to try them on to find a size that flatters your body

Tester’s Verdict

Stella Pentti – SWrtier, Whitelines

“These bib pants are literally the best snowboard outerwear investment I’ve ever made. The model comes in multiple different styles, softshell, 2L, short, long… However, for someone who spends a fair amount of their time on the snow, in different surroundings, I invested in a pair of Avalon Gore-Tex bibs.

First of all: size. I prefer a slightly tighter fit on the snowboard pants and usually tend to wear size S. However, the Gore-Tex model here is slightly baggier, so I found that the XS was a better fit for me than S. As for the length, the bibs are designed quite long, which is ideal for me as I’m 172cm tall with long legs, so the cut is perfect.

Second, I’d just like to say that the quality is unreal – but then again it is Gore-Tex. I’ve worn these in minus 20 degrees in Lapland and at sunny slushy spring sessions in the alps, and they work equally well for both occasions thanks to their breathability. Despite the XS size, I didn’t find them to be snug at all either even when I had to double up my layers for some extra warmth.

All in all, these are a big favourite for me – and they drop down easy too thanks to the 180degrees zip so you don’t have to take off all your layers when using the toilet either. And they’ve got all the necessary pockets too – which is great for spring sessions if you want to ride without a jacket.”
