Why we chose the Brethren Apparel Softshell Anorak and Joggers Snowboard Outerwear: Unisex snowboard outerwear offered at an affordable price point.

Founded by the Kyte siblings back in 2013, Brethren Apparel started off by selling their crowd-pleasing signature Thug Ruggs. Last year the brand moved on to selling outerwear and introduced the snowboard scene to their unisex-sized Softshell Anorak and Softshell Joggers.

Known for their laidback attitude and unpolished behaviour, the Kyte’s have managed to create clothing that reflects their view on snowboarding by offering outerwear with a relaxed old school vibe and a ‘get-up and go’ attitude.

Who Are The Brethren Apparel Softshell Anorak and Joggers For?

This isn’t ultra-technical outerwear designed for long hikes in the backcountry, and unless you’re the next Jeremy Jones, you probably won’t need it to be either. Snowboarders looking for fashionable technical streetwear with a maximum level of comfort will find that in the Brethren Softshell Anorak and Joggers.

Materials and Construction

Looking at what the snowboard outerwear has to offer, we more seldom come across softshell fabrics. Softhsell fabric is made from a woven material thus making it, as the name implies, a softer choice compared to a hard shell. The jacket/pants do not have a lining but are instead made by bonding two layers of fabric together, designed to bridge the gap between a fleece and a waterproof jacket. You’ll basically get all the comforts of a fleece, but with a protective layer to keep the wind and the rest of the elements out.

Like the waterproof and breathability ratings imply, this is not going to offer the kind of protection needed when hiking through nipple deep powder in the backcountry. This is a more stretchy option for outerwear, designed to move with the body and helping to maintain a comfortable body temperature even during more strenuous activities, whilst still offering protection against snow and rain. And, thanks to the super soft fleece lining, it is also a perfect place to nest in especially after a heavy night out.

Fit and Features

By recognising that a lot of ladies out there struggle to find snowboard outerwear that isn’t the average tight sitting pink pair of pants and jacket, Brethren decided to introduce a completely unisex clothing line. The idea is to not pigeonhole a new design just to one gender, but alternatively give everyone a chance to enjoy it.

They’ve decided to not run separate lines for males and females, but instead test each new garment on both men and women to ensure the baggy cuts flatter both body types. So, the ones looking for something more tight-fitting might need to steer their attention elsewhere.

For improved functionality, Brethren’s made a few tweaks by upgrading the features. An added drawstring pulley has been placed in the anorak for better protection against the snow whilst the pass pocket is also new for this season. As for the ‘roo pouch, Brethren’s removed the map flap and side zips and replaced it with a media pocket.

As for the pants, the ankle seams have been strengthened using the same Cordura fabric as the brand uses for their Shredder hoodie. The pants also feature a pulley system allowing you to change the fit according to your own style.

On another note, Brethren’s also offering four full prints and three plain colourways to choose from, providing the option to match your look from tip to toe.

Brethren is offering riders good quality snowboard outerwear that you don’t have to break the bank with. The Softshell Anorak and Softshell Pants are designed to give just the right amount of protection an average snowboarder needs when riding through the resort.
