Smith Code MIPS 2019-2020 Snowboard Helmet Review

Why we chose the Smith Code MIPS Snowboard Helmet: Keep your head safe (MIPS safe) while, at the same time, looking as good as you can with a helmet on.

If you’re looking for a techy helmet you usually end up with something that looks like a mishmash of a ski/cycling helmet. Luckily for all the snowboarders who prefer a minimalistic helmet design, Smith have gone and created their Code MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) helmet.

For those who aren’t familiar with the MIPS technology, let us break it down for you. Your average helmet is constructed based on how it handles damage when dropped onto a flat surface. However, when you’re out and about the chances that you’ll hit your head from an angled impact are far more likely and, so, MIPS was created.

“Basically, what the minds over at MIPS have done, is that they’ve created a sliding layer between the outer shell of the helmet and the head”

Basically, what the minds over at MIPS have done is created a sliding layer between the outer shell of the helmet and the head. If you fall and hit your head, the helmet tech slides into action and absorbs some of the impact – reducing the potential damage done to your brain.

In addition to the MIPS system, the Smith Code helmet was constructed using Koroyd – which provides superior impact absorption, flexibility, and ventilation. This specific material manages energy in a more efficient way, while also increasing the air flow and reducing the overall weight of the helmet (together with the Aerocore construction). Factor in the AirEvac ventilation system and it’s clear you won’t need to worry about your head overheating.

If fitting a beanie underneath the helmet has proven to be a struggle in the past, the Boa 360 fit system will make that problem disappear at the turn of a wheel. Basically, you can adjust the helmet to fit your head – whether you need it tightened up or loosened.

This tough yet lightweight lid (it’s only 450g) is definitely worth the price. You’ve got seven different matte colours to choose from, within any size from S to XL. Strap this helmet on top of your head and you won’t only look good but feel safe. Stay safe out there people.
