Spark R&D

Our pick of this season's best Spark R&D snowboard gear

Spark R&D have been operating out of Bozeman, MT since 2006 and were created when Will (owner, founder and designer) had his first blast on a splitboard and thought how much better the whole experience would be if there was a binding made specifically for splitting. Since their initial conception Spark have launched a complete revolution in the backcountry community, they’ve constantly been innovating to improve their products, and as such other companies have had to make leaps to catch up.

Avid splitboarders themselves, the Spark posse are constantly testing their products and pouring that feedback into new designs. Spark pride themselves on their high-quality products, and so decided that they wanted to manufacture the entire product line in-house so they could have total control. In-house production allows them to have really tight quality control over their whole line, and also gives them the opportunity to fire out prototypes super quick. On top of that, they’ve got some of the best names in the game representing their bindings, such as Robin van Gyn, Antti Autti, Elena Hight, and Griffin Siebert.

Spark have led the charge on creating products that improve the overall experience of split boarding, and they haven’t hit the ceiling yet. We’re stoked to see how far they can take it.

Spark R&D Surge ST Pro Splitboard Bindings 2022-2023

PRICE: $629

Spark have long been the market leaders when it comes to splitboard bindings. With backcountry explorations becoming increasingly popular, their high-tech gear is flying off the shelves quicker than ever before. For the most powerful, high performance split bindings out there, take a look at the Surge ST Pro. This pair features all the key features of the Surge ST – from the easy-to-use T1 binding system to the lightweight baseplate. However, they’ve been pimped up to include carbon reinforced highbacks, premium plastic straps, as well as custom hardware. A top-end piece of kit for skinning up and charging down.

Spark R&D Arc ST Pro Splitboard Bindings 2022-2023

PRICE: $429

Lightweight? Check. High-performance? Check. Long-lasting? Check. The Arc ST are dubbed as the most accessible bindings in the Spark range. Unlike the Surge ST, they’re lighter and softer with a more surfy feel. Just check out the baseplates and you’ll see what we mean; the Arc has big cut-out chunks, dropping their weight significantly. These bindings are aimed at riders who aren’t necessarily charging big lines, but want kit that’ll last. However, saying that, Spark have upped the tempo with their Pro edition, throwing in stronger highbacks, super touch straps and custom aluminium parts that are 65% lighter than their stainless steel counterparts.
