What is FASE, how does it work, and is it worth the hype?
Bindings have pulled the ultimate rags-to-riches story over the past several years; they’ve gone from a mostly overlooked part of your setup – the ugly sister, as it were – to the belle of the ball. They’ve been in their Renaissance era for the last few seasons, and we’re seeing innovation and tech evolving at an unprecedented pace.
Over the past year or so, you’ve probably noticed a new name peppered in amongst the usual heavy hitters. FASE has been the talk of the town, the biggest story from every trade show, with floods of rider-driven testimonials and a veritable buffet of social media content at our fingertips. But all this media hype begs the questions: what actually is FASE, how is it managing to stand out from the crowd in a near-oversaturated binding market, and is it worth the fanfare?
“I never thought I’d ride a binding with a new entry system that didn’t compromise on performance – and now I’m hooked.”
Tor Lundstrom
What is FASE?
Firstly, it’s important to note that, as opposed to being a single binding, FASE is an ingredient brand that slots into current models in the Jones, Bataleon and Rome lines and makes its joint arrival with the all-new ThirtyTwo binding project. The Bataleon Blaster, Rome Katana and Jones Mercury have all been given the FASE treatment, as well as the debutante ThirtyTwo T32M.
At its core, FASE is a revolution that’s based on evolution. They’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here; FASE sits as a best-of-both-worlds option- a two-strap binding, just with a few choice upgrades to bring ease of use and convenience to the forefront, without sacrificing on-snow performance. All the comfort, dependability and locked-in feel you’d expect from your traditional two-strap with none of the clunkiness, compatibility issues or weight that can come hand in hand with ‘easy entry’ models.
Co-pioneered by OG Wildcat JF Pelchat, FASE has permeated the binding industry with incredible alacrity. Battle-tested by the best in the biz and ready for anything, from steep, technical lines in the Alaskan wilderness to all-out urban assaults in the Helsinki streets. Minimal fuss, maximum performance- any boot, any rider, any terrain, any adventure.
How does FASE work?
The FASE system is centred around three bits of new tech- the self-closing Autoback, the lengthened FastStrap ankle ladder and the Locked-In Toe Strap. These ingredients form the core of FASE, leaving brands to tinker with baseplates, straps, canting and other usual binding personalisation. Meaning that just like a traditional binding line, each product is distinct, aimed at a different rider- all that ties them together is the convenience of the FASE system.
Each product features a pressure-sensitive lever near the heel cup that, when engaged by your boot, much like a bear trap, forces the opened-out Autoback highback to snap into place. The Locked-In Toe Strap uses LSR 2.0 buckles, which lock in place as soon as you stop cranking, and a tri-toothed ladder to prevent slipping. Set this to your desired size before riding, and it remains in place all day. The FastStrap ankle strap is an innovative long ankle ladder allowing for intuitive one-handed closure and tightening, and opens wide enough to slide your boot in with no faff. To release your foot, simply loosen the FastStrap, lift your heel and voilà, the Autoback opens out to allow you to slide out.
It really is that easy. FASE isn’t trying to muscle in on the speedy entry market or promising you the world; they’re a timesaving, convenient add-on that allows traditional two-strap bindings to up their game while retaining all the function and performance you’ve come to expect from them.

Pat Fava
Who is FASE for?
Therein lies the beauty of FASE; it’s an ingredient system that’s been adopted by several brands and incorporated into their lines. So, rather than being a single binding for a single purpose, it’s been used in a multitude of different bindings for a multitude of different riders. The ease of use means it’s great for those chasing quick lift departures or anyone tired of ladders being in the way, the universal compatibility gives it the edge when it comes to fit, and the zero-compromise, classic two-strap performance is something every snowboarder can get behind. It’s a win-win-win scenario.
How does FASE differ from other products on the market?
It both does and doesn’t. Being integrated into existing models like the Blaster, Katana, and Mercury means you’ll notice some major similarities to the OG editions. Everything you know and love about them remains; you’ll just be getting some added sauce and saving time every time you strap in.
As for other entry systems, it’s a totally different ball game- they’re completely distinct, and there’s no comparison to be made. FASE are not ‘quick entry’ or ‘step-in’ bindings; it’s a system that’s incorporated with traditional two-strap offerings to improve the overall experience. Unlike other products on the market, you’re not paying a premium for the pleasure of using FASE, and you’re not having to choose convenience over performance or vice versa; with FASE, you can have your cake and eat it too.
What’s the durability like?
As with any new product, it’s natural to have a bit of trepidation about the longevity, but rest assured, although we’re only recently seeing the products in the public eye, the FASE team has been quietly working behind the scenes with leading industry professionals on their system for 7 years.
They’ve spent countless hours tweaking and refining every last detail to ensure the utmost durability. And it’s not just lab coats and test tubes either; FASE bindings have been wear-tested in the most rugged terrain by the most aggressive riders. They’re so sure of their products that FASE is backed by a lifetime guarantee, but on the off chance anything untoward should happen, spare parts will be readily available.

Do pros actually use FASE?
Absolutely yes. FASE is used and trusted by a huge range of pros, including Jeremy Jones, Ståle Sandbech, Tor Lundström, Scott Stevens, Pat Fava, Victor de le Rue and Marrisa Krawczak. Marrisa noted, “The control and response I had in the FASE bindings was unmatched this past winter. The board feel they provided from edge to edge made me feel super confident in steep and technical terrain, where I need to make precise and quick movements.”
What terrain is FASE designed for?
Quick park hits or far-flung heli trips, FASE refuses to be pigeonholed. Scott Stevens and Jeremy Jones snowboard on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, in totally different terrain, but both employ FASE bindings. FASE has been thoroughly put through its paces and has the chops to handle what comes its way. Each binding using the FASE system is a totally different beast, so whether you’re looking for cruisy laps on the hardpack or fancy tackling the steep and deep, there’s a FASE binding out there for you.
Which FASE Binding is the right one for me?
There’s no cut-and-dry answer here, but we’ve outlined the basics to give you an idea of what riding style each binding equipped with FASE will support best.
Bataleon Blaster FASE
The Bataleon Blaster FASE is fast, fun, and unfiltered—just how snowboarding should be. Built around a super surfy AsymWrap chassis that allows for boned-out grabs and tweaks galore. The Blaster FASE uses high-end AuxTech straps that employ a honeycomb pattern to mould perfectly around your boot, eliminating hotspots and pressure points, as well as a canted footbed that allows you to exert even pressure. Beyond Medals frontman Tor Lundström likes them so much, he made a pro model version: “I never thought I’d ride a binding with a new entry system that didn’t compromise on performance – and now I’m hooked.”
The award-winning Katana we all know and love, but pimped out with FASE. These are Ståle’s bindings of choice for tearing up Alaskan faces during the Natural Selection Tour and Maggie Leon’s in the streets- the Rome Katana AW FASE can do it all. Ståle’s multi-faceted approach to riding highlights their incredible versatility. “I’ve been riding the Katana FASE all last season, from park laps to the top of the mountains in the backcountry, and they have been riding really nicely. Feels just like a normal, trusted two-strap binding, but with the Fast Entry system to top it off.”
The most playful and freestyle-focused in the collection, the ThirtyTwo T32M FASE gets the seal of approval from Pat Fava: “I’ve ridden the FASE System bindings in the streets, at resorts, while building pow jumps, and in contests. Not only do they work great in every environment I’ve put them in, but they also work quickly and efficiently, all while being strong and stable.” This may be ThirtyTwo’s first year in the binding game, but they’re no strangers to making high-quality products that put the onus on rider-refined features. Tweaky, flowy and hella fun, the ThirtyTwo T32M is all about letting the good times roll.
The Jones Mercury FASE is the unabashed freeride destroyer of the crew, designed with input from Victor de le Rue and tested by the man himself in the gnarliest terrain on his Freeride World Tour-winning season. As Victor says, “After 30 years on a snowboard, it feels amazing to finally ride a binding that truly innovates. Faster, smarter, and perfectly suited to every aspect of my riding.” Built around a sophisticated and powerful Fusion XR baseplate, with a DualFlex ankle strap and an ergonomically designed asymmetric highback, the Jones Mercury FASE is for riders who refuse to compromise on performance.

So, is FASE worth the hype?
Having had the Whitelines Test Team extensively put FASE through its paces over the past season, we can say with confidence that they are, in fact, worth the hype. All of the performance, security, locked-in feel and adjustability of a regular two-strap binding, just easier to get in and out.
