Rome Vice 2018-2019 Snowboard Bindings Review

In simple terms, the Rome Vice snowboard bindings are a scaled-back (and subsequently cheaper) take on the Rome Katana. Introduced only last year, they proved instantly popular and return largely unchanged for 2018/19.

Naturally some of the Katana’s key tech is missing here; there’s no upgraded highback, nor is there any D30 gel in the baseplate to absorb heavy landings. What these do have, though, is the same asymmetric chassis that make the Rome Vice bindings true all-mountain weapons.

“Quick, powerful edge changes guaranteed every time, without leaving the rest of your foot feeling like it’s trapped in a (ahem) vice”

By having the powerful yet lightweight aluminium run along only one side of the baseplate, the result is a binding with plenty of edge-to-edge power and response, but also the freedom to move laterally (as in, from side to side).

Combine this with the ‘V-Rod’ baseplate, which varies the thickness of the foam where the binding meets the board, and you’re definitely on to a winner. Quick, powerful edge changes guaranteed every time, without leaving the rest of your foot feeling like it’s trapped in a (ahem) vice.

The customisation options are excellent as ever – not only can they help you achieve the perfect fit, you can also fine-tune how much response you get (hence the fluid flex rating above).

Genuinely great for park, piste and pow, a pair of Rome Vice bindings remain a stellar choice for the all-rounder.

Tester’s Verdict

Andrew Duthiewhitelines.com

The Vice and Katana have similar characteristics but differing levels of tech – one that pulls out all the stops, another that’s pared back at a lower price point. However, the gulf between the two bindings is a lot less than the one you’ll find between those boards.

“You never feel like you need an upgrade”

These feel like they could withstand so much abuse, let the building blocks are all sleek, slim and (most importantly of all) light. The door is immediately open for all types of riding, knowing that you’ve got a foundation you can trust. They’re comfortable as hell, too, so when you’re actually using them you never feel like you need an upgrade.

While the Katanas are undoubtedly more premium, a good plan would be to opt for these instead, then put the savings towards the Rome Marshal!”
