Jones Mercury 2019-2020 Snowboard Bindings Review

Jeremy Jones is no stranger to the NOW family. He previously put his name to the Drive bindings and, last year incorporated their unique ‘Skate-Tech’ into the Jones line with two new models. The Mercury is their most versatile, all-mountain, binding.

There’s no shortage of ways to tune them into your own riding style. The FlipIt ankle straps, allow for two riding modes and response rates in one. Freeride – for sharper response rates and more efficient power transmission, or Surf – to free up your ankle flex and get a little more tweak through your turns.

You can dial in the performance further with the interchangeable contact bushings to either up the response rate or add a little more dampening and smoothness to the ride.

The Flex Hinge highback features a small channel running across the top which, Jones say, takes out some of the chatter when riding at higher speeds and eliminates any calf bite. That asymmetric design increases contact on the medial side and adds lateral support. A highback that follows the angle of your leg – hardly groundbreaking but, surprisingly, still quite uncommon.

It’s a binding designed to help you push every aspect of your riding and comes backed up with a lifetime warranty, so they’ll hold up when you’re charging on the limit, even if your nerves don’t. For the more demanding free-riders out there, the Apollo is the stiffer, less compromising model up.

Tester’s Verdict

Rob McCreathWhitelines

“I’ve been a fan of NOW bindings for a while. The Skate Tech is subtle, but that’s the point. It’s everything else that comes with the package that rounds off the quality of the product.

The Jones Mercury sits somewhere around the level of the NOW Drive, making it a really versatile all-rounder to suit most styles and abilities of rider. They don’t scream freestyle the same way that a pair of Unions might, but there’s enough flex and mobility going on to definitely bring a little flair to your riding.

Where the bindings really come to life is on big, wide-open turns – piste or powder. If you don’t notice the pivoting motion, you will still appreciate the dampening from the contact bushings. Riding these bindings makes you feel like your feet are much closer to the edge of the board, and therefore able generate the same response through the turn with less effort.

The FlipIt Straps are a stroke of genius and offer two different riding styles in one. For me, it’s all about the lower strap option for increased surfy flex and steeze. Other riders will prefer the stiffer strap position, but that’s exactly what makes the Mercury such a solid all round option.

Asides from the Jones branding, it’s unmistakably a NOW binding in its performance. Quality made straps and buckles, decent cushioning underfoot and, for a binding that feels really solid and supportive, they’re still really lightweight.

I know which side of the fence I’m on when it comes to NOW bindings, so hopefully, the Jones editions will win over some more fans. Imagine how good these things will look on the Frontier!”
