Why We Chose The Flow Mayon Plus: Flow’s most versatile women’s binding continues to impress.

A returner to the Whitelines 100 this season, the Flow Mayon Plus once again impressed our team of testers to make it into our favourite products of the year. An upgrade to the ever-popular Flow Mayon, the Mayon Plus is all about delivering grade-A performance alongside premium comfort.

Rear-entry bindings have long divided opinion among riders — some love them, some love to hate them — but over the years the technology and functionality has come on leaps and bounds. Flow have put the work in the R&D lab to win over more and more snowboarders, ironing out any issues and focusing on creating bindings that appeal to a huge range of people.

Who Is The Flow Mayon Plus For?

The mellower flex and all-round comfort of the Mayon Plus gives it a super wide scope of appeal. But if you prioritise ease of use and convenience then you’ll fit right in here.

Baseplate

The Mayon Plus takes on the same glass-filled nylon baseplate as the OG Mayon. It’s rockered to better transfer energy to the contact points and allow your board to flex more naturally underfoot.

Flow do a lot of things well, but perhaps one of their best moves is a steel cable that creates what Flow call a Power Triangle, connecting the highback to the centre of the baseplate allowing for optimum energy transfer. When taut, it provides instantaneous reaction and a seamless bond between the two pieces.

Straps and Highbacks

If you’re unfamiliar with Flow and are thinking about dipping your toes into the rapid-entry market, here’s a simple breakdown: The clip on the highback is the centrepiece. When released, it allows the highback to fold down which in turn moves the main strap up and out, reducing friction and giving you ample room to slide your boot in.

The Fusion version has a more substantial connection between the heel and toe sections, spreading pressure evenly over the top of the foot, whilst the Hybrid is a little more similar to a traditional two strap binding, with a definite heel and toe and a thinner connecting strap.

Both strap options use Flow’s ‘Set it and Forget it’ technology, and just like it says on the tin, you set the straps to fit your boots, and then use these Locking Slap Ratchets to secure them in place.

“Now, as speed entry systems are back firmly in the forefront, Flow are still able to offer one of the most popular and performance-oriented bindings in that sphere”

Roundup

The Mayon Plus bindings are built for everyday riding. They’re a little more forgiving than the top of the range Omni and will suit riders of all ability levels. They’re an all-mountain powerhouse that aren’t eye wateringly expensive or frighteningly stiff, and our test team came back with thumbs up across the board.

After the early step-in binding systems crashed, burned and faded into the ether, Flow were left as pretty much the only quick entry system on the market for many years. Now, as speed entry systems are back firmly in the forefront, Flow are still able to offer one of the most popular and performance-oriented bindings in that sphere.

Pros:

  • Rear Entry can be easier for those with mobility issues
  • The versatility of Fusion and Hybrid straps is great for those who really want to dial in their fit

Cons:

  • Can be a little heavier than a standard two strap
