Why We Chose The Patagonia Heavyweight Merino Socks: Sometimes you need to treat your feet.

For a lot of riders, especially those starting out, socks can be an afterthought. Some old hiking ones will do, they might say to themselves, as they look to commit that cash elsewhere.

“Merino’s incredible antimicrobial properties banish boot-stink”

Take it from us; this is a rookie error. When you take a moment to consider what your feet actually go through over an average day in the mountains, you might be more inclined to invest in some premium toe-clothes after all. That’s why we recommend turning to the brands that go big on quality – of which Patagonia, with its built-to-last approach and fondness for merino wool, definitely is one.

Who Are The Patagonia Heavyweight Merino Socks For?

Because of the relative warmth these offer, we’d recommend them to anyone expecting seriously cold temperatures. Your toes will thank you – and given merino’s incredible antimicrobial properties that banish boot-stink, so will your fellow travellers.

Materials, Construction and Features

The Patagonia Heavyweight Merino socks are made from a blend of merino wool, nylon and polyurethane – all the right ingredients for comfort, warmth, stretchiness and durability. The material varies as you move around the sock, from sturdy-yet-discreet cushioning at the heel and toe to a more porous panel on top of your foot to minimise sweating. Further up the leg, the sock lightly grips your calf, and also features channels of more breathable material that allow air to escape.

As this is Patagonia, you can rest assured that the wool comes from a sustainable source. Indeed, the brand uses nothing but Responsible Wool Standard (RWS)-certified wool across its whole range, which is good news for the sheep. There’s no smoke and mirrors with regards to production, either; the name of the North Carolina-based, family-owned factory that puts these together is right there on the Patagonia website.

Socks are like football referees; if they’re doing their job well, they’ll barely register in your thoughts. If they’re having a shocker, it’ll be all you talk about for the rest of the day. On paper, all a decent sock needs to do is keep you comfortable, and not fall to bits. If it can avoid turning into a biological weapon after a few slushy sessions, so much the better.

In practice, it’s surprisingly hard to find a pair that actually ticks all these boxes, so when you find one don’t let it pass you by. That’s certainly what we have here; the Patagonia Heavyweight Merino socks are genuine difference-makers, in more ways than one.
