BCA 300 Carbon 2018-2019 Snowboard Avalanche Probe Review

They can't control my mind!

  • LENGTH: 300cm extended / 50cm collapsed (118” / 9.7”)
  • WEIGHT: 280g (9.9oz)
  • PRICE: £99 / €89

When snowboarding off-piste, any probe is better than no probe – but for something that’s so seemingly simple, there are a few factors to consider. Length is a factor; if you’re lucky enough to ride somewhere that typically gets a crazy deep snow pack, then you need a model to match – such as the Backcountry Access Stealth 300 Carbon avalanche probe.

As the name suggests, the BCA Stealth 300 Carbon extends to a whopping 300cm. The collapsed size is a mere one-sixth of that, though, so anyone with a decent-sized backpack will have space for this. The carbon shaves off a few grams compared to the standard version – it might not seem like much, but every little helps when you’re going to be fully laden for the day.

Should you need to use it, just take the Stealth out of the bag and pull on the orange handle at the top. The sturdy internal wire does the rest, and once the probe is fully extended a satisfying click tells you that it’s ready to use.

Laser-etched markings run the full length of the probe, telling you exactly how deep you’ll need to dig. In non-emergency situations, they’re also perfect for measuring the depth of the snow pack.

To release, simply squeeze the spring-loaded clips on the side of the top section, and the tension is removed. Systems don’t come much simpler or more reliable, so you can be sure that any rescue can be conducted as quickly as possible.

That being said, even the most basic system requires practice, and getting clued up on how best to manage an avalanche situation is even more important than having the right gear. That’s why BCA offers videos, explainers and FAQs on its website for free.

The carbon version of the Stealth probe also comes in a 240cm size, which is more appropriate for smaller packs, but if you can accommodate the extra 10cm of collapsed length then the Backcountry Access Stealth 300 Carbon avalanche probe is the safer option. And if you regularly ride in zones with very deep snow packs, it’s essential.
