Snabbsnö – The Bindings of the Future?

Over here at Whitelines we’ve seen a lot of highly questionable snowboard inventions over the years, but this latest ‘revolution’ from Snabbsnö did at least revive an old question:

Is snowboarding already tech enough?

Their concept – not the first in its field – follows in a line that includes hinged bindings, rotary bindings, step-ins, disc systems and more, none of which have overwhelmed the market at large, and many of which seem to combat ‘problems’ which the rest of us just accept as part of the experience.

Many inventions seem to combat ‘problems’ which the rest of us just accept as part of the experience.

Is bending down to strap in a hassle? A little bit – but its never been a day wrecker…

Do I want to walk around/push with a whole binding attached to my boot? No.

Now we’re not talking about inevitable developments in board materials etc. here – lighter, more efficient versions of the existing board, boot, binding formula are always going to be part of the production process. But, like our skate and surf cousins, the basic elements that make up what we ride only have so much room and need for variation.

Surely, if we focus too much on getting rid of the ‘inconveniences’, we’ll end up fundamentally losing what makes snowboarding snowboarding? Or do you want a deck that pops itself too?
