So there’s a referendum on our voting system today. Rhetoric on both sides has been pretty heated, stopping just short of ‘if you don’t vote Yes/No [delete as appropriate], a swarm of locusts will devastate our crops and Bin Laden will come back to life!’
At least we know one thing both sides can agree on: either system would be better than the one used by the X-Games in 2009. While Torstein Horgmo and Travis Rice risked life and limb on the gigantic booter, their fate was in the hands of those watching at home, who could text (that’s right, text) their vote on who should win.
Despite sticking a switch back 12 as clean as you like, Torstein was robbed. Naturally the American audience went for the home team, and Travis’ score of 78% to Torstein’s 22% was no reflection on what actually happened.
Being the good dude that he is, Travis admitted as much during his opponent’s interview and, mercifully for all concerned, the system got scrapped. So no matter what we end up with today, remember: it could be worse!
