Shaun White’s cult of personality is such that people will literally do almost anything to get to him. Take this crowd of boy scouts in the States for example. Let us just set the scene. It’s a warm sunny day on a Boy Scout jamboree somewhere in middle America, and Shaun White is due to come and sign some stuff for the children. Copious quantities of hotdogs and coolaid have probably been consumed, and the fat little kids are high as kites on hero worship and sugar. Their adolescent adulation is such that they’re already lined up three deep chanting Shaun’s name moronically before he’s even arrived. “Shaun! Shaun! Shaun!”

When he appears over the other side of a field, flanked by two nervous-looking minders, the cubs can contain themselves no longer. Surging forward, they scream his name, trampling their fellow scouts in the process. They cannon into the fence like flies hitting a windscreen – only there’s so many of them that they pretty much smash through it. A mini-Hillsborough is only avoided because members of the US Army (the army ffs!) step in and herd them back across the road. God knows what happens to Shaun White in the carnage – we can only assume he made it out alive… thankfully, one of the kids had the presence of mind to film the whole thing, posting it on Youtube with this suitably idiotic comment: “At scout jamboree we took down a fence to get to Shaun White hahaha”. You’ve gotta love it. God bless America.
