OK, so even though this is obviously pretty old, we at WL hq have only just stumbled across this brutal slam involving a pre-pubescent Shaun White and Bob Burnquist in the height of his wacky early-noughties sunglasses days
“Bob very nearly changed the course of snowboarding as an industry with that one careless grind.”
The word brutal doesn’t even cover it: if this crash was to happen with a Shaun White of today, the equivalent Burnquist would be about ten foot high and weigh 25 stone – that is a hell of a lot of man meat falling out of the sky onto a pretty tiny kid.
As our designer said upon viewing this video: “Bob very nearly changed the course of snowboarding as an industry with that one careless grind.”
As horrible as the crash is, the way MTV put this clip together is at best hilarious, at worst suspect – selling the story as one of tragedy whilst simultaneously repeating the slam over and over again in slo mo.
Though there are some (unitentionally) genuinely hilarious bits hidden in the video, like when Tony Hawks states “It’s happened to all of us” as if all pro vert skaters have to avoid being mown down by a crazed Bobby B as part of their initiation onto the contest circuit, as well as right at the end when Bob’s high 5 just about looks like it was going to send El Blanco backwards off the fence.
Yup, this isn’t very relevant or current to snowboarding, but it is August after all..
