Slice ‘n’ Dice | Down & Out in Switzerland

The Slice ’n’ Dice crew explore the hidden gems of Switzerland

The Slice ‘n’ Dice crew is back, with their latest project ‘Down & Out in Switzerland’. The boys took to the road last February, just before the first lockdowns started to hit Europe. We’ve seen the boys carve through everything from well-known Austrian glaciers to Japanese winter wonderlands, but this time around the focus was on exploring the hidden gems located in Vaud and Valais, Switzerland.

We got to chat to Sam McMahon, the man behind the camera, who shared his thoughts on the latest Slice ‘n’ Dice edit, carving and a bit more.

“After six episodes of Slice ’n’ Dice, we really wanted to do something different this year”

“After six episodes of Slice ’n’ Dice, we really wanted to do something different this year. We wanted to move away from the doubles action and create more of a travel piece, and seeing as Nidecker is proudly Swiss we the concept we came up with was to find the best resort for carving in the area surrounding the original Nidecker factory: the Vaud and Valais cantons.

Those of us that didn’t already have vans to sleep in hired them, and we were able to explore freely up and down the valleys, going to where we thought might have the best conditions on any day. It’s been said a thousand times before, but it’s a great way to see the Alps, not being tied to any particular place for too long.

It was originally meant to have a bit more of a documentary feel, but I started editing it back in March just as the first lockdown came in in France and I was pretty miserable. I had this story about us being completely free to go anywhere, but at the same time, we weren’t allowed to snowboard or even go further than a kilometre from our houses. I ended up writing the script trying to invoke my favourite writers like Jack Kerouac and Tom Waits, no doubt poorly, but it’s where my head was at the time.

At the end of the day, it’s a snowboard film, but I wanted to use it to remember how liberating snowboarding is during normal times, and watching it back now it gets me fired up for things to start opening up again next year. Fingers crossed. I miss the guys, and can’t wait to get back on the road with them all.

The carving stuff is always awesome: Dave unlocked some new stuff like the elbow only carve and spinning into Euros, and Lewis’ style is just always incredible, effortless. But this year we hammered home how snowboarding is so much more than the stunts. I hope this film shows that.”
