Interview with Anniina Perhovaara

What's next for the Finnish 10-year-old?

She’s definitely cooler than any of us was at the age of 10, and most likely, cooler than any of us will ever be. Anniina Perhovaara landed the opener in Jess Kimura’s ‘The Uninvited’ at the impressively young age of eight, and she’s dropped some pretty sick edits since. But what got this 10-year-old into street riding in the first place and what are her plans for the future?

“It’s just so much fun to find new spots and then figure out what sick things you could pull of there”

We’ve been following you for a couple of seasons now. What got you into filming street edits in the first place?
From the very start, street riding has been a big part of snowboarding for me. Pretty much all of my favourite riders’ ride street, which is what got me into it in the first place. I started off hitting some smaller spots that I saw on my way to school and then slowly made my way to bigger spots. It’s just so much fun to find new spots and then figure out what sick things you could pull of there.

How did it feel to be part of Jess Kimura’s ‘The Uninvited’?
The whole ‘The Uninvited’ project was incredible! First of all, Jess is one of my biggest idols, and I’ve watched her parts over and over again. They still keep on inspiring me and make me pumped on riding. It just felt so unreal to get to be part of her project. And all the other riders she got involved filmed the sickest clips ever! I’m still so stoked on the whole film!

You’re 10 years old now, what does your future within snowboarding look like? Are you looking to compete or keep on riding street?
Yes, and turning 11 by the end of spring. At the moment, I’m just stoked as long as I get to ride every day. I reckon I will keep riding street as long as I keep on snowboarding. It just feels natural to me to always be able to do something a bit different. It doesn’t need to be some big sick spot; those small and creative jibs are a lot of fun too.

“I reckon I will keep riding street as long as I keep on snowboarding”

I do like to compete, especially when I was younger [younger, really?]. Back then, I still had the chance to practice my jumps at our local slope. Unfortunately, the little corner with the kicker was razed to the ground a couple of years back. So, the only obstacle that you could get some big and smooth airtime from was demolished due to the organisation of the cross-country competition.

This year we’ll try to shred the SkiOne.fi resorts: they’ve got good kickers. Our closest resort is Kasurila, which is about a one-hour drive from ours. Let’s hope the car lasts through the winter so that we’ll get to go riding. Would be fun to take part in some comps again next year, but I’d need to have some tricks to do. And once again a big thanks to SkiOne.fi for the season passes!

Any film projects we should be aware of?
Jess Kimura is currently putting together ‘The Uninvited II’ (the final name for the project hasn’t been confirmed yet), so the plan would be to get some footage for that. Let’s hope we’ll manage to film this winter. I’m already super pumped!

“Last spring, for example, Antti Autti messaged me and asked if I wanted to go freeriding with him to Pyhä – That was rad!”

Anything specific you look forward to this season?
Usually, the sickest things are always the ones you can least expect. Last spring, for example, Antti Autti messaged me and asked if I wanted to go freeriding with him to Pyhä – That was rad! So, let’s see what this winter brings.

Who would you say is your inspiration?
This is a tough one. There are so many of them, but lately, I’ve been shredding with Kiril Rikkilä a lot, and that guy is super inspiring. He is such a good and creative rider, and always suggest things for me to try out too.

What’s your current favourite trick? And what do you want to learn next?
I’d say that ever since I learned it four years back, my favourite trick has been the Fs Boardslide. As for next, I’d like to learn more tricks of kickers. And for rails, I’d like to get a touch for the blunts, but that’s going to be a lot of work!

And finally, what set up are you currently riding?
The board is Rome Minishred 120cm and the bindings are Union Cadet XS.
