Halfpipe Is Still the Best Event at the Olympics. Here’s Why
As riders are preparing to drop in Beijing, our editor at large examines why Halfpipe is still the ultimate contest
Scotty James was only 15 years old when he entered his first Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010 – but he’s always been fast out of the blocks. He started riding at the age of three on a one-off 80cm board his dad found in Canada and bought for $10. What an investiment!
Scotty had already been on the slopes for two years at that point and he was competing by the age of 6. At 10 he switched from racing to halfpipe, and the results soon started pouring in. In 2015 he took the gold at the FIS World Championships, and bronze at the Red Bull Double Pipe.
