The winter wonderland of Meribel played host to ‘She Styles Spring Ride’ one of the sickest girls events of the season on March 18th. Hosted by new local snowboard shop Avalon in conjunction with a collective of local seasonnaires (otherwise known as The She-Unit) and Alex Barrerre (Rip Curl), The She Styles Spring Ride saw over 100 girls ascend on the moon park, some for the first time, to rip and shred in a fun and friendly girls only environment.
The day brought sunshine and blue skies, good vibes and a buzz of excitement in the air, as girls from all across the three valleys and some much further afield, turned up to register and catch first lifts. Those who got there early enough were lucky to receive goody bags stuffed to the brim with treats from the events sponsors Rip Curl, Vans and Nitro including a Bandana, badges, stickers and loads of other stash.
The morning session saw over 85 girl riders take part in the free style lessons. The awesome instructors from Cab 9, Magic and New Generation put the girls through their paces over kickers, boxes and rails. The relaxed and pressure-free atmosphere saw the girls laughing, cheering and supporting each other through every stack and new trick attempted.
Along with producing some sweet new skills there were definitely new friendships formed, and some newly inspired ‘park rats’ created through the morning sessions at She Styles!! In the afternoon the phat beats dropped by DJ Kaya and the smell of burgers on the bbq sponsored by Scott Dunn were enough to draw in a massive crowd of seasonaires and punters to watch the demo. Some seriously steezy tricks were thrown down by local and pro riders including Camille Imbert (Nikita) and Alex Barrere (Rip Curl).
The demo totally hyped the girls for the afternoon jam session. Over 40 girls stayed to compete in the beginner and intermediate groups. For over an hour the girls jammed on the kickers and boxes in the park while the crowds watched. The intermediate comp saw some sick spins, shifty’s and even a backflip get thrown down. While the beginners comp saw some big 180s and even a few 3’s get tried over the kickers and some sweet presses and slides over the boxes. The crowd were so stoked by the comp and the energy from the girls trying to nail new tricks, that they pelted any boy with snowballs who dared to try and ride the park!
The whole event was filmed by Andrew ‘Brew’ Robinson as well as photographed by professional photographer Sam McRae. The girls did their best to look sick for the camera and of course a few comedy stacks were caught on film as well.
The vibe of the day carried on well into the evening as loads of girls and supporters turned up to Avalon Rider shop for a cheeky drink and to check out the prizes that were on offer from the event sponsor – Rip Curl, Vans, Nitro and Anon for the top girls of the day, the biggest improvers and the best stacks.
Those that still had energy carried on into the evening enjoying a well-deserved bevy or two at the Doron Pub’s ‘Bling Night’ after party. The party capped off what can only be described as the most epic day of the season!
