Breckenridge legalises weed

Not your average horti-f*cking-culturalist - this could soon be a common sight in Breckenridge...

Yes, you read that right. The powder paradise that is Breck has decided to take the bold step of legalising weed, meaning shredders in Colorado could be enjoying an apres spliff along with their pint.

While this may sound like the stuff of stoner snow-bum’s dreams, the decision is a perfectly rational one voted in by a referendum last November. The law, which came into force on New Year’s day, makes Breckenridge the second town in the States to make smoking legal, after the Colorado state capital Denver passed a similar law in 2005.

Brian Vicente, who coordinated the campaign for legalisation, said: “There is no sense in criminalizing a substance that is far less toxic, less addictive, and less problematic than alcohol.

“This is a huge step toward a more sensible policy, in which adults are no longer punished for making the rational, safer choice to use marijuana instead of alcohol.”

The new law means that anyone over the age of 21 will not be prosecuted or face criminal charges for carrying up to an ounce(!) of marijuana. Although weed is still technically illegal under Colorado state law, the Breckenridge police department indicated they will not be enforcing that particular clause in the town – so shredders partial to a bit of a blaze should be able to smoke up where they want.

If you fancy visiting Breckenridge to erm… sample the local produce, then keep an eye out for Seb Kern’s guide to the resort in the next issue of Whitelines.
