With a whopping 11.77m of snow at resort level, the snowiest resort in the Alps in the 2012/2013 season has been named…
…Avoriaz!
In a recent article by Weather to Ski, the Portes du Soleil resort (and home to many a British seasonaire) was identified as logging the most snowfall in the season just gone.
As our pre-Christmas trip to the region proved, snowfall came thick and fast at the start of the season without really letting up until the new year, with fluctuating temperatures bringing some rain into the mix before winter regained its grip to round out the season with more white stuff settling going into spring.
The pattern was mirrored across much of the Western Alps, while Austria and Switzerland received snowfall that was closer to their average figures. France was definitely hit the hardest though with many previous snowfall records being topped.
Isola 2000 saw 8.3m of snow – nearly twice its long term average and its 2nd snowiest year on record, while Les 2 Alpes recorded 10.75m of snow (at 2600m) – its highest ever figure since records began in 1982.
They’re impressive figures no doubt, but as Brits, when it comes to weather, there’s always more to be desired and with all that snow there were definitely fewer bluebird days this season than many would have liked.
Either way, as our facebook and Instagram feeds showed us on a far too regular basis, it was a very encouraging season overall in Euroland and we’re hoping the trend continues going into 13/14 – we’ll just have to unfriend the worst offenders ;)
