After the men’s and women’s Olympic boardercross races this week we’ve been inundated with requests on how to get into boarder X; many people seemed to be inspired by the slidey/crashy antics.
Never wanting to disappoint, especially those who are comfortable hurling themselves down icy courses alongside other lunatics, we got in touch with Kyle Wise from British SBX Riders who had this to say:
Northern Freestyle which are based in Manchester are the only active UK based club that incorporates snowboard cross. They provide coaching when they have a snowboard cross track set up, which is a few times a year.
There’s a few UK based competitions, the British and English Indoor championships are held in the Manchester Chill Factor during the summer. There’s also the Scottish Ski and Snowboard Cross Championships in Glenshee, which this year will be held on the 1st and 2nd of March. However, spaces are limited so you should get looking into that ASAP if interested.
These comps are low level and good places to try out the sport. It’s currently very unlikely you will find tracks in the UK which are not at competitions.
Fast leg movements are required for a straight start section, and features such as wu-tangs and rollers are key to the sport.
British SBX Riders are hoping to work closely with a UK snowdome to create a permanent start gate to help us develop our sport. Fast leg movements are required for a straight start section, and features such as wu-tangs and rollers are key to the sport. Good features are often the piece of the puzzle that many boardercross riders are missing in their training.
The best way to train otherwise is to ride everything you can; board control is what makes a good boardercross rider! And if you ever get a chance to go out to the Alps keep your eye out for courses, most resorts these days have a half decent attempt at one.
If anything else comes up on the radar we’ll have it on our British SBX Riders page, so keep tabs!
In the coming weeks and months we’re hoping to share some of British SBX’s webisodes, so stay tuned!
