Brand new from the good folks in Italy at Union Binding Co – the Neo introduces new tech to the binding world.
A true all-mountain option with fresh tech, we’re expecting this one to turn more heads than the woman in the red dress.
“The Union Neo marries some of the brand’s most tried-and-tested approaches to binding design with a splash of the new.”
The Neo is the latest entry in Union’s high-performance range, built for those who’ve been through a broken component or two and would prefer not to repeat the process. It’s also a little softer than the others in the stable, so they’d really suit those who prefer surfier turns to straightline-charging.

While the Union Neo shares a lot of DNA with the long-established Ultra, the big difference is the new three-part baseplate. Other than the necessarily-rigid mini mounting disc contained within, the bit under your feet is quite malleable, and makes only a small footprint on your board. The more rigid side-sections essentially work to bend the underfoot section as you shift your weight on to them – so when you flex the board in, say, a press, the baseplate flexes with it. This allows your board to flex more naturally, a sensation that those who use more conventional bindings might not know that they’re missing.
Everything else under your foot is there to soak up vibrations and impact from big drops. Specifically, on the heel side you get thermoplastic rubber to cancel out chatter, while on the toe side it’s compression-moulded EVA foam. That should give you enough confidence to take on the gnarlier stuff, but if you need more reassurance then look to Union’s unmistakeable, signature aluminium highback – the ideal combination of lightweight and durable.

The highback featured on the Union Neo has been around for a few years now, but it’s not hard to guess why. Its intricate four-part construction delivers both durability and a consistent, fairly forgiving flex (hence the name; ‘Duraflex’). Each pair of highbacks are also asymmetrical, which tends to improve response while also reducing discomfort in the lower leg.
Strap technology across the industry marches on apace, so it’s rare that you’ll find an ankle or toe strap that isn’t capable of getting the job done. However, if you take a marginal-gains’ approach to your snowboarding then the Union’s Neo’s straps are what you’re looking for. Both separate the tightening mechanism from the boot-hugging cushioning, delivering an even spread with no pressure points, and a zero percent change of slippage throughout the day. The low-profile magnesium ratchets are buttery-smooth, and the ankle strap also flops open to allow you to step in with ease.
“A mid-flexing marvel that offers something truly unique, expect to see this become a mainstay of the Union line. “
The Union Neo marries some of the brand’s most tried-and-tested approaches to binding design with a splash of the new. It’s the latter more than anything that has led to the Neo’s fairly eyebrow-raising price tag – several Unions come in at much less than this one – but under the feet of the right rider, these could be The One. A mid-flexing marvel that offers something truly unique, expect to see this become a mainstay of the Union line.
The Neo takes all the comfort and freestyle performance of the Ultra and places it in a more freeride-tinged package. An exceptional binding for someone looking for an all-mountain option that blends freestyle and freeride performance with immaculate comfort, and enough response to keep you charging hard.”
