Nidecker Snowboards | 2021-22 Gear Preview

As part of our new Envision Series, we take a first look at Nidecker's new 21/22 snowboard product line

Welcome to our new Envision Series where we’ll be bringing you the latest gear previews, with some of the most exciting new snowboard, boot, binding, outerwear and goggle products to drop for winter 2021-22. In this Envision episode, we’re taking a look at next year’s lineup from Nidecker.

The Whitelines Team usually spend the first few months of each year frantically running around trade shows, chatting to brands and getting out for some turns with next seasons gear. Unfortunately, with most of Europe still in lockdown and on-snow demos relegated to the ether we decided instead to bring the trade show vibes directly to you with our new Envision Series, giving you a sneak peek of what to expect from some of our favourite brands for next season.

A big story from Nidecker next season is the launch of their new Instinct Series, a collection of equipment that has its roots firmly in nature. Years in the making, it’s been developed using a practice called biomimicry, a concept which emulates strategies and systems in nature for solving human problems.  They’ve looked at the outside world and taken pointers from the most insane innovation in history.

“They’ve taken problems and questions that are relevant and specific to snowboarding and looked for answers and solutions that have been millennia in the making”

It marks a shift in the paradigms of Nidecker’s snowboard design, taking it right back to the drawing board and pulling inspiration from the natural world. They’ve taken problems and questions that are relevant and specific to snowboarding and looked for answers and solutions that have been millennia in the making. We’re seeing a bit of a step away from traditional Nidecker graphics with this new Instinct Series, as well as a wealth of new tech and innovation.

Check out our product preview on the new Nidecker snowboard gear for 2021/22 below, as well as our interview with Thierry Kunz (Shaper, Brand Manager) & Samuel McMahon (Filmer).

What’s your hero story going forward into the 2021/22 season?
TK – Next year we will be launching the Instinct Series, a brand new line with four boards, two bindings and a boot. It’s among the projects I’m most proud at Nidecker, and it’s been a pleasure working alongside our lead engineer, Antoine Floquet, who’s been very involved in the process.

We have taken inspiration from the science of biomimicry – using biological entities and processes to find design and production solutions – to create new shapes to ride: the droptail from a predatory bird to generate more lift in deep snow; the shape of a penguin’s chest to help initiate a more ‘rolling’ sensation when turning.

We’re constantly inspired by nature, and the Instinct Series celebrates that. It’s among the projects I’m most proud of from my time at Nidecker. We’ll keep a little of our powder dry with the details, but the collection is insane – we can’t wait to share it in full.

What product are you personally most stoked on?

SM – I’ve used the Helios boots for the last couple of years and I’m already in the new Instinct colourway that has a custom footbed collab with Remind Insoles.

“They’re lightweight poplar wood, sustainably harvested and crafted in Switzerland with FSC and PEFC certification”

That plus a few tweaks to the shell and liner (we have a new boot engineering team who are doing awesome things) have made it my favourite so far. It’s a big deal for me, I spend a lot of time working and hiking in boots as well as riding, so when they work so well it’s a godsend.

What new tech and materials can we look forward to seeing for 2021/22?
TK – We’re a Swiss company, and as such we are super proud to be using our new NDK Swiss Core across the Instinct Series boards. They’re lightweight poplar wood, sustainably harvested and crafted in Switzerland with FSC and PEFC certifications, and go hand-in-hand with the rest of our drive to be as sustainable (and transparent) as possible.

“We were super-stoked with the success of the Odyssey, which in turn inspired the re-shape of the men’s Mellow”

Have you made any specific changes or leaps within your women’s range?
SM – For 21/22 we have a redesign for our most popular women’s specific board, the Venus. It has a new directional shape but with only 10mm of setback, and is made for playful, resort-focused riding. We were super-stoked with the success of the Odyssey, which in turn inspired the re-shape of the men’s Mellow, so we are excited to be experimenting with introducing new shapes into the line with a female-first policy.

Saying that, we have a completely new board, the Thruster, that’s designed from first principles to be a unisex charger, the rider just chooses a size. Taking the best bits from the Platinum, Rave and Princess, it’s a precise, all-terrain performance board, and the first of our boards to use SideKick technology with a directional shape.

“Shin Biyajima and Mathieu Crepel are the driving forces behind the Instinct Series”

Have any team riders been involved in the R&D process? Where have you been putting these new and improved models to the test?
TK – Shin Biyajima and Mathieu Crepel are the driving forces behind the Instinct Series. They both have very turn-centric styles and were asking for similar things from their equipment: more lift, smoother edge-to-edge transitions and precise rail control with less effort. Having specific engineering goals made finding solutions via biomimicry really fun and rewarding.

Covid has shaken up everything this year. Are there any big changes taking place with you guys ahead of next season?
TK – Our aim is to stay as adaptable as possible, but at the same time prioritising bring excitement and innovation to the market. Being part of a family-owned business – and one as passionate about snowboarding as the Nidecker brothers – really comes into its own in times like this. There are no shareholders to appease, and we can prioritise people (staff, distributors, shops) over profits.

“It really puts the ‘Inspired by Nature’ motif of the series into perspective”

Aside from products, what are you working on for next winter?
SM – My focus with filming this winter is with the Instinct Series, working with a few key riders. Being based in France, and with no lifts obviously, it’s a cool opportunity to tell some unique stories. Some days up the mountain we see more wildlife than we do humans, so it really puts the ‘Inspired by Nature’ motif of the series into perspective.
