Matt Cummins is one of the OG’s of the Mervin crew, and his legendary status has gained him not one, but multiple pro model snowboards. The Lib Tech MC Snake Kink is one such deck, a freeride focused shred stick that’s happy bombing around on piste, dipping into the trees, and throwing out some smooth, surf style slashes. Being kinky ain’t a crime.

Mervin’s C3 profile technically does have some midbody rocker, but it’s so subtle that this board essentially rides like a traditional camber. This is a powerful and aggressive board, the edges engage right at the contact point and offer continuous pressure through the turns. With Lib’s Magne-Traction edges, and a stiff tail backing up the camber dominant board, you’re all set to rail through the whole arc of your turn without fear of slipping out.

“With Lib’s Magne-Traction edges, and a stiff tail backing up the camber dominant board, you’re all set to rail through the whole arc of your turn”

A big name in the BMX scene, Damian Fulton is coming in HOT with the Radical Rick graphics, and while they might be eye-catching enough, you’ll almost certainly stand out in lift lines with the kinked nose as well. It’s touted to aid with float when you’re off the beaten track and to sail across chop and chunder. The two-inch setback helps to keep the weight focused over the tail, further lifting the nose and allowing the board to be driven from the back leg and slashed through choppy turns.

It’s not the lightest board on the market, but the Aspen & Paulownia core have a solid strength to weight ratio, with a comforting amount of underfoot feel. As with all Lib offerings, the MC Snake Kink is manufactured using recycled materials, water based inks and using greener power sources.

“The Glider also sports an eco-sublimated TNT base, which is low maintenance and high resilience”

It’s fair to say Matt Cummins is a pioneer in the snowboard industry, he championed the twin tip movement and has the longest running pro model on record. Whether you want to ride this, hang it on your wall, or carry it around as a fleeting memory of ‘the good old days’ the MC Snake Kink is a worthy partner in crime.

Tester’s Verdict 2019/20

Paul WoolProfessor

“What else would you expect from a Matt Cummins board; this thing is rad – different and oozing with style. Those graphics…sublime. I rode the 159 – my go to length – for two days over varied terrain. On the surface it is an unconventional freeride board but, in terms of ride-ability, it is very versatile, tons of fun, stable, plenty of work, and particularly enjoys speed. It is somewhere in the medium to hard stiffness range, with a noticeably harder tail. It has a pronounced camber feeding out into pronounced contact points suspended between ample sidecuts, behaving as you’d expect; good pop and good carves.

“It’s pretty stiff so it wasn’t a walk in the park, but worth the effort”

Overall the carving was excellent, it enjoyed going fast and the strong camber really helped pop you in and out, allowing nice weaving carves. Whether short and tight, or fast and long, the Snake Kink always delivered. It is pretty stiff so it wasn’t a walk in the park, but worth the effort.

It’s a very comfortable board to ride, really stable. It’s got a pretty average weight but feels heavy and powerful underfoot, which I like. Little to no chatter, zero speed wobbles, like most Mervin boards the Snake Kink has a very shock absorbing core. It felt nice on kickers and for general jumping, sidehits and ollies. It felt light and stable in the air, and stuck landings light well.

The board has a large nose that unusually kinks up very sharply – I’ve not ridden anything like that before and to be honest i’m not sure if it contributes to anything. It definitely floats well in powder and feels good to turn but it doesn’t feel any better in choppy snow, or hitting gnarled out quarters or side hits. If anything, it makes such challenges worse. But I hate to end on a downer, the board is sick, a real curiosity, something to be kept forever.

Also, it 100% gets my support for best graphics winner. What a fucking great job they’ve done.As a BMX bike riding enthusiast I’m stoked to see the Mervin boys getting Damian Fulton back on the pay-roll. Fulton’s creation Radical Rick was an old cartoon that featured in BMX Plus, one that has made its way back onto a Lib Tech after many years. Hyped on that!”
