The kick-off to the winter season is more often than not a high octane, hard-partying month of debauchery. It’s a flat-out sprint across the no-man’s land of back to back movie premieres, glacier openings and magazine releases that leaves the snowboarding community with a multi-day hangover and a smattering of fresh STD’s.

After that rumpus, when we’re presented with a trailer whose focus is the tranquil magnificence of Mother Nature and the deliberate slowness that goes hand in hand with splitboarding, we breathe a collective sigh of relief and gladly settle down to watch it.

‘Turn Of Mind’ is a look at how Patagonia Ambassador Nicholas Wolken connects to Mother Nature and why he chooses to do so. He takes to the Swiss mountains with a few good friends to pay homage to the landscape and the scenery that fuel his passion for snowboarding. Wolken is one of the masterminds behind Korua Shapes, a snowboard company focused on the unassuming joy of turning. He’s dedicated much of his career towards the notion that a simple thing done well, can have an impact far greater than could be imagined.

“Going up on a splitboard, slow by nature, you start to gaze around. With not much to do, your mind wanders freely.”

It has never been more imperative for us, as humans, to feel connected to nature. We’re truly at a turning point in the climate crisis and it’s desperately important that we start becoming ferociously protective of the Earth. Having these deep-seated links with nature will help us all in feeling more part of it all, and hopefully, more motivated to want to fight to save it.
