Why we chose the The North Face FUTURELIGHT™ Steep Series Brigandine Snowboard Pants: It’s a completely revolutionary piece of kit.

The North Face’s new technology FUTURELIGHT™ is to the outdoor industry what the Coca-Cola recipe is to Pepsi. It represents the very pinnacle of its field, the magnum opus, the pièce de résistance. It’s a closely guarded secret and it is the envy of its competitors.

These Steep Series Brigandine pants feature the new FUTURELIGHT™ technology, which is touted to be the worlds most advanced, waterproof material. It’s created with a Nanospinning process, which creates loads of holes, and these holes are absolutely tiny. We’re talking smaller than Shaun White’s chances of making it to the Olympics for skateboarding. Miniscule.

This new Nanospinning process allows for incredible amounts of versatility. The designers are able to make micro adjustments to the fabrics to tailor them for specific activities. With its space age chops FUTURELIGHT™ is also able to be super sustainable. The North Face can now make three-layer products using 90% recycled materials.

The membrane is permeable enough to let air flow freely, but rain, snow or sleet can’t pass through. The venting it provides is unmatched, allowing you to keep clothing on despite changing temperatures. The outer material is also softer than a traditional shell fabric which gets rid of that annoying crinkle as you’re moving.

The bib style of the pants is essential if you’re a powder hound, or you’re adverse to having a soggy bum. The pants also have an integration system to be used with a jacket for extra help in keeping you dry. Secure zip locked kangaroo pouch on the front, and hand pockets either side are big enough to store your stash.

These are definitely worth a look if you’re a fan of splitboarding – the crazy amounts of ventilation will allow you to be as comfortable on the skin up as you are on the ride down. Check out the Steep Series Brigandine Jacket here.
