Why we chose the Burton Hometown Hero Snowboard: Imagine Hulk Hogan and Flash Gordon had a lovechild.

Seems like someone at Burton went from “think global” to “think local” – The Hometown Hero is Burton’s answer to Vermont’s tight tree lines and icy slopes. This thing is a new addition to Burton’s Family Tree line, so if you haven’t yet found your ideal board within this family the Hometown Hero might be what you’ve been looking for.

“The Dragonfly core uses end-grain wood in the impact zones of the stick, which allows for swapping out heavier woods for lighter ones without the board losing any strength”

This hero isn’t quite as aggressive as some chargers but it’s definitely got the minerals to stand up against the heavy hitters. Its medium to stiff flex makes this a powerful board and you’ll be charging groomers and big powder lines faster than you can say FSC Certified Dragonfly 600g Core – which, funny you mention it, is precisely what’s under the hood.

Burton’s Hometown Hero is a lightweight beast. However, this lightness does not compromise the overall strength of the board. The Dragonfly core uses end-grain wood in the impact zones of the stick, and you can blast through choppy snow and chunder with ease.

Despite the stiffish flex you’ll find this board to be quite manoeuvrable especially when going edge to edge. The camber profile allows for a long effective edge while still giving the board a nice bit of pop.

With the front half of the board being rockered you can expect super smooth turns. What’s more, kicking up that nose while riding powder is a piece of cake (no fear about losing your balance here). This thing has got a 12mm taper, which also makes diving in the deep much more manoeuvrable.

The Burton Hometown Hero is a fun, stable and responsive vehicle. It works as well for charging down the groomers as it does for shredding the deep. This isn’t a park board, but thanks to the Balanced Freeride Geometry, riding switch is no problem (you’ll still get the benefits of a directional board). It isn’t the ideal board for beginners, but more advanced riders will definitely appreciate all the aspects this Hometown Hero has to offer.

Tester’s Verdict

Jon Bird LD Mountain Centre

“All new for 2020 season as part of Burton’s family tree range the Hometown Hero is a directional all mountain snowboard that Burton built for charging around the icy tree runs of their hometown hills in Vermont.

“The Hometown Hero was a surprisingly fun snowboard to ride, quick and manoeuvrable with a really surfy feel”

The Hometown Hero was a surprisingly fun snowboard to ride, quick and manoeuvrable with a really surfy feel. The board has glass stiffeners at the nose and tail perfect for powering through crud with the softer flex between the feet giving that great forgiving nimble feel.

The Hometown Hero is a fun forgiving board that is at home all over the mountain but would be perfect for a Southern Hemisphere season, I’d love to lap Exchange drop at Coronet Peak on the Hometown Hero. If you like a nimble surfy feel this might be with adding to your quiver.”
