BRAND NEW: GoPro HERO5 & Karma Drone

Voice control, handheld stabilisation and the first GoPro drone!

After the release of the Session last year, it’s all been a bit quiet on the GoPro front. That is until now, the leading action cam company has just released a swathe of new gear (available in October) including upgrades to both the HERO and Session cameras, as well as their own handheld stabiliser (finally) and drone system: Karma.

GoPro HERO5

Following from the Session, the HERO5 comes case-less, meaning they can pack in more tech into a larger package without upsetting any rigs or mounts you may already own. It comes with a touchscreen on the rear like the HERO4 Silver, which means they’ve switched the working controls over to the same one-button system as the Session, but also adding in voice control, so you can shout at your head cam should the perfect photo op arise.

Potentially more exciting for professionals, the HERO5 now can shoot RAW stills as well as JPGs, allowing for greater freedom once you get back to your editing suite. It will also log the location of shots and upload them to ‘the cloud’ for you automatically, and a new internal stabilisation system will reduce shaky footage and tidy up photos in low light.

Other than that, and the usual ‘improved image quality’ that comes with every new release, it’s much the same as the GoPro HERO4 Black under the new housing. In other words: bangin’.

Video resolution: 4K @ 30fps, 2K @ 60fps and 1080p @ 120fps
Photo resolution: 12mp at 30fps bursts
Price: £349.99 from 2nd October

GoPro HERO5 Session

It looks like this is replacing the Silver version of the new GoPro release, i.e. the pared down version of the flagship, pro level camera. It’s slightly less powerful in terms of performance, but it’s a hundred quid cheaper and a lot more compact.

Whilst it loses the screen, location capture and RAW shooting ability, it gains the same voice control, internal stabilisation and cloud-enabled back up as its big brother. Compared to the standard GoPro Session, it’s the same form factor but with a slightly updated housing, but has a better sensor enabling crisper pictures and 4k video.

Video resolution: 4K @ 30fps, 2K @ 48fps and 1080p @ 90fps
Photo resolution: 10mp at 30fps bursts
Price: £249.99 from 2nd October

GoPro Karma – Drone & Handheld Stabiliser

Possibly the most exciting release from any camera brand this year, the GoPro Karma is a handheld stabiliser and drone in one package. It all looks pretty portable – the drone folding up without any additional assembly – and potentially most importantly, it’s cheap.

Admittedly, it’s not the most high end drone available – a range of only 1km and 20 minutes of fly time on a battery isn’t great (it will probably be less in cold conditions) – but the fact that it doubles down on the gimbal and allows you to swap it into a handheld and mountable grip is pretty special, and potentially game changing for backcountry filming.

We’ll obviously do our best to get our hands on one to test out properly, but for now check out the additional video from GoPro for more details.

Compatible with: GoPro HERO5, HERO5 Session, HERO4 Black & Silver
Price: £719.99 (from 23rd October)
