Vans Wangl Tangl celebrates 10th Birthday in Style

Last week the legendary Wangl Tangl contest went off in Austria bringing its regular mix of art, skating and classy team competition to the slopes of Mayrhofen. This year though, a comp which is already big bad and heavy had an extra boost – because it’s the 10th anniversary, headline sponsors Vans had pumped a load more cash into the comp, allowing the organisers (Austria’s Aesthetiker crew) to put on a week long ‘Contestival’. With big-name acts like MOP lined up to take care of the evening entertainment, artists from all over Europe exhibiting as part of the Looking Sideways project, a specially shaped park and a whole bunch of a-list shredders coming to ride the team battle, the week was crazy. Here’s a quick look at what went down.

In the main event, the Finnish team of Janne Korpi, Peetu Piiroinen & Ville Uotila cleaned up, with a winning run that included a massive back 10, and a switch front board to switch crippler. They were pretty much always gonna take it though, I mean they’ve got Peetu on the crew, and he never loses does he? That said, the Kahle Ohlson, Eric Willet and Arthur Longo combo also looked pretty good, as did the local boys of the YMCA team, with their matching jumpers. Oh, and how sick is that park btw?

Off the hill, the Looking Sideways exhibition seems to have gone off a treat, with several Brits showing their stuff, and a good crowd rocking up for the opening night/free beer. Oh, and then there was that wall of eyes…

And then there was this skate jam. Like the snow comp, the skating is a team battle, with judges looking for the two man team that makes the best use of the ramp together – cue synchronized skating from the likes of Team Jinetes. Is that cool, mirroring tricks? Or does it have a bit of a whiff of this about it…

Either way, the whole shebang looks to have been a blast. As this re-cap of all the action shows. Yeah, we kinda wish we were there too…
