Rip Curl Celebrate 30 Years of Mountainwear

2017 will mark 30 years of Rip Curl’s Mountainwear division. Back in 1987, the iconic Aussie surfwear brand’s founders decided the time was right to extend ‘The Search’ beyond the world’s beaches and to the snowcapped peaks that surfers were increasingly gravitating towards in the winter months.

This odyssey led them from Mt Buller, to Chamonix, Canada, Chile, Alaska, New Zealand, Abkhazia and beyond, and saw them pioneering such innovations as STL (stitchless technology), their super-flexing Gum Series and Ultimate Gum Search Suit, not to mention integrating ultra-pimp technologies such as Cocona/37.5 in order to keep riders dry while respecting the environment.

To mark this triple-decade occasion, Rip Curl have produced what they believe to be the Ultimate Search Outfit – a combination of pinnacle products (30 Years One Piece Zip Free and Freeride Airbag Vest). All of which combine to give serious backcountry Searchers the tools they need for the wildest weather conditions.

30 YEARS ONE PIECE ZIP FREE

This one-piece is billed as the go-to outerwear for riders who like nipple-deep pow way out back, as the fully sealed-in design also boasts a 20/40k fabric that’s lightweight and hyper-stretchy for ultimate freedom of movement on heavy ascents or decents. Most interestingly, the 30 Years One Piece Zip Free borrows from their heritage in making wetsuits in featuring zipperless entry for even more protection from the elements. Of course, all the high-end shred-specific features you need are present and correct, plus there’s a fixed hood with an integrated facemask should the mother of all storms hit.

FREERIDE AIRBAG VEST

When you head to the backcountry you need a bunch of stuff, not least your backcountry safety gear. For day missions you don’t need much storage space so rather than go the backpack route, Rip Curl have developed this lightweight, ultra-low profile Freeride Airbag Vest that couldn’t be more stable to ride with. As well as all the pockets and straps, they’ve built in 14 dual-density foam panels to offer extra protection if you ragdoll, and better still they made it compatible with the Mammut Airbag 3.0 system, which is claimed to be “the lightest, comfiest and most reliable airbag system on the market.”
