The snowboard industry isn’t short of eye-catching designs that draw the attention of window shoppers, but few of them deliver on performance quite like the YES. 20/20. Five years ago it completely redefined what a powder snowboard could be, two years ago it underwent a pretty significant overhaul, and for winter 21/22 it remains one of the most versatile powder sticks on the market.

“Backcountry freestyle is the name of the game here”

Who Is The YES. 20/20 For?

Backcountry freestyle is the name of the game here. The shape and 3D contouring make the 20/20 primed for chucking spins off pillows and cat tracks, but it’ll never feel out its depth if you’re taking it through the jump line, or even just cruising side hits around the piste.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

Shape-wise, the 20/20 adopts a true twin outline, so its performance in regular and switch is evenly matched. That’s coupled with a lively camber-section throughout most of the board’s running length. Pop, power and precision are in no shortage and the 20/20 will suit riders who like that snappier more dynamic feel of a classic bend.

It also benefits from YES.’ industry-leading MidBite sidecut. Here, the edges are pulled in around the midsection of the board to create a narrower waist width. This has two key advantages. Firstly, the board feels more manoeuvrable between turns as the narrower section between the inserts allows for a more lively and reactive torsional flex, so setting up for kickers or darting tight lines through the trees feels very responsive.

Secondly, the increased volume at the ends of the board doesn’t take away from its turning performance, but it allows for increased volume in the nose and tail, which won’t just assist with increased float, but provide a slightly more stable platform at the ends of the board for big landings and stability at high speeds.

Construction and Materials

The real talking point, however, is the translucent, featherlight material at either ends of the board. And while it’s virtually impossible not to pick up the 20/20 and flip the bird to your mates from behind the opaque material, it delivers on far more than novelty comedy value. By removing wood from these key areas of the board, the 20/20 feels impossibly light with a nearly non-existent swing weight.

Add to that the fact that YES. have masterfully engineered these sections into a 3-dimensional convex shape and you get a true twin that delivers mind-blowing powder performance. The contouring of these sections allows snow (and air) to travel under the board and provide a hoverboard kind of lift at the ends.

Where the construction sticks to more conventional materials, poplar, paulownia and bamboo have been used to strike a balance of lightweight pop, and powerful response. That’s wrapped between tri-ax fibreglass layers which beef the overall spec up to a seven out of ten.

Roundup

There’s no shortage of versatile snowboards on the market, nor is there a lack of supply for more adventurous shapes, but rarely do the two combine without compromising on either front. The 20/20 is, in many ways, the best example of what the crew at YES. do so well: genuine innovation, sensational performance, and a construction that – for all its wow factor – still delivers on durability and versatility.
