Why We Chose The Weston Gnarnia
Two become one in this new offering from Colorado-based brand Weston. The result is freeride perfection, with longevity clearly very much front of mind during the manufacture.
“The Gnarnia could be the cupboard door that unlocks a magical kingdom of new adventures”
Who Is The Weston Gnarnia For?
The obvious first answer is ‘anyone who enjoyed either the Ridgeline or Riva’, two erstwhile Weston boards that were known for their ability to go hell-for-leather. Both boards’ DNA has been fed into the unisex Gnarnia. Plus there’s a big size range to catch all comers.
“The directional elements are subtle… so switch riding, and landings, are still very much on the table”
Shape, Profile and Sidecut
The clue’s in the name – the Weston Gnarnia is built for high speeds and long sends. So while it’s technically an all-mountain board, it’ll be at its best when testing your nerve, wherever you end up.
The directional elements are subtle; there’s a bit of taper in the outline, a slightly longer rocker section at the nose, and the build is a little different in the tail (more on which later). Still, switch riding, and landings, are still very much on the table.
The majority-camber profile and fairly stiff flex make this not a million miles away from a halfpipe slayer, but with the taper you get a bit of a performance boost in powder as well – including for those whose dream day is to spend a morning shaping a hip and an afternoon launching off it into a bowl.
A true all rounder, then – but one that requires a switched-on brain at all times.
“The topsheet has been designed specifically to take a battering without incident, giving you extra peace of mind on sharkier days”
Construction and Materials
As you might expect for anything flying the ‘gnar’ flag, there’s plenty of carbon in the build including Weston’s S-Weave which – you guessed it – involves cleverly weaving carbon together from the topsheet right through the core and into the base of the board, resulting in a turbo-charge of pop.
At the tail; two stringers run from the inserts to the contact points, increasing the rigidity of the tail and giving you more of a platform off which to pop. It’s also been incorporated into the fibreglass for additional torsional stiffness throughout. Response is therefore lightning-fast, with the trade-off being that you need to put a bit more effort in to twist it. The three woods in the core – poplar, paulownia and bamboo – are among the lightest options out there, yet strong and snappy too.
Given that you’re expected to really put the foot down, the Weston Gnarnia’s sintered base is there to help. Over on the other side, the topsheet has been designed specifically to take a battering without incident, giving you extra peace of mind on sharkier days. That’s enhanced further still by the backing of a four-year warranty – so if you like to push your limits, you can rely on this Weston to prevent a super mare (sorry).
Roundup
If you haven’t guessed by now, the Weston Gnarnia is not for the faint-hearted – but then no one ever touched glory by hedging their bets. Even those still honing their skills on the XL line might want something more park-specific – but for the rider prepared to harness its potential, the Gnarnia could be the cupboard door that unlocks a magical kingdom of new adventures away from the realm of mere mortals (talking lions and Jesus metaphors not guaranteed).
Pros
- Has all the elements needed to deepen your trick bag in the powder
- Happy to turn its hand to the rest of the mountain when it’s low tide.
Cons
- The barrier to entry is fairly high, so even confident intermediates should perhaps look elsewhere for now – but bookmark it for later!
Tester Verdict
Sara Previte
“A freeride board that has your back – stable at high speeds with incredible edge hold. This board was awesome at carving. For a freeride board that wants to go fast and straight, once put on edge this board was easy to turn. Perfect for someone who wants to ride big terrain and carve some steep groomers.”
