The Details:
The WEST Captain Achab is a leviathan of a board, available only two sizes – both of them big. If you’re not a big dude, however, don’t be put off: take a closer look and you’ll see that this will appeal to powder fans of many shapes and sizes.
The sidecut radius and running length of this board are far lower than you’d expect for a board of such end-to-end size, so it’ll actually ride like something far shorter and nimbler. The oversized nose and tail are mostly absent when you’re riding on firmer snow, but when you get this into the powder they really show their worth.
Carbon crosses at each end give the Captain Achab a bit more stiffness at each end, which you’ll be thankful for when things get serious. They also help you execute powerful ollies, whether it’s on a side-hit or a loaded-up spine. It’s a bit softer through the waist, though, so manipulating it with your feet is relatively easy.
The WEST Captain Achab is made for backcountry freestyle, and when conditions are right you’ll get fantastic float in the deeper stuff. That maneuverability you enjoyed on the piste carries over as well, meaning this can really help you deepen your out-of-bounds trick bag.
