A versatile board with a freestyle bias, the PLY is a nice intermediate deck with a penchant for fun and games. Biax fibreglass gives the board a playful flex that’s perfect for chomping sidehits and forgiving enough to give you a helping hand when you’re trying to lock in new tricks.

6mm of positive camber gives you a nice pre-loaded ollie and keeps the board snappy and lively as you’re riding. It’s balanced out with flat sections outside the contact points to remove a bit of the traditional catchy feel associated with camber boards.

“The PLY has a base that’s super easy to repair to save you some of the hassle when the inevitable happens.”

A good park board has to be able to take a beating, as if you’re slamming onto boxes and razzing on rails you’re bound to take a chunk or two out at some point. The PLY has a base that’s super easy to repair, to save you some of the hassle when the inevitable happens.

The edges come pre-bevelled so if you’re into riding rails you’re less likely to catch on a burr or a scud. The mellower edge helps make the board a little more forgiving on piste as well, but you do sacrifice a bit of bite as a result.

DC have a nifty little trick where they can print the graphic straight onto the board rather than faff around with a traditional topsheet. It shaves off a bit of weight and leaves it with a unique look.

Tester’s Verdict

Paul WoolProfessor

I definitely enjoyed the 2020 DC PLY, it is a decent all-rounder with stand out freestyle credentials. I had a lot of fun in the park, ripping side hits and jibbing down the hill. It handled the rest of the mountain well, but maybe a bit tame in the carving department.

I have never ridden a DC board before, the PLY was my first. I got to ride the 157W for 3 days in Italy in March 2019. I rode medium-stiff bindings throughout and got a range of conditions.

It is definitely a well made board, it is light and looks study, with a nice finish and nice graphics applied straight on to the wood. It is a 6 on the stiffness scale, with the flex running evenly across a nice true twin shape. There is an even hybrid-camber tip to tail with visible flat/rockered areas on the outside of each foot, right on the key contact points.

“It stomped landings and sucked up shocks from the knuckles to the flats”

On the snow it is pretty stable, it runs fast, and can handle speed reasonably well, very little chatter or wobbly vibes going on. I didn’t feel it was a great board for turning, it did the job, but I’d like more snap from the camber, and the edges didn’t really initiate turns to a high standard, I feel this could be down to the flat sections on the board. It is definitely not a board built for charging high speed turns with confidence, but a beginner or freestyle-nut will appreciate the bevelled edge that is definitely more forgiving. I was riding the wide version of the 157, which handled well in powder, there are definitely better boards for the deep stuff, but it floated and maintained its speed sufficiently.

It was definitely a good time in the park, I spent a lot of time hitting kickers and trying to tweak out grabs and spins. It felt solid hitting big jumps, handling fast run-ins with ease and confidence. It stomped landings and sucked up shocks from the knuckles to the flats. It is really light and feels nimble and dexterous enough for getting a bit technical on boxes and rails. A cambered twin with a bit of stiffness is what I like in the park. I wish I could have sessioned a quarter or pipe on the PLY, as it pumps really well, but I didn’t get the chance.

The PLY is a great freestyle board, super fun, made for a good time getting high and technical in the park. Great for a progressing intermediate to advanced park rider, that doesn’t mind sacrificing a little response and edge control on the piste, for extra give when throwing down tricks. I beginner wanting to step up their game could certainly enjoy the PLY’s offering too.
