Why We Chose The Amplid Soulmate

The Amplid Soulmate proves that a quiver killer doesn’t necessarily have to do the same to your bank balance. A premium-feeling ride at a tasty price.

Who Is The Amplid Soulmate For?

Despite Ryanair’s efforts to make “no frills” feel like something you’re condemned to, we know that plenty of riders see the appeal in stripping out the unnecessary and focusing on the fundamentals – and that’s exactly what the Soulmate does. It’s also ideal for the relative novice that likes the idea of keeping their options open as they progress.

“It really is a thing of beauty; one that even the simplistic topsheet can’t disguise.”

Shape, Profile and Sidecut:

As you can probably guess, the shape is the star here. The Amplid Soulmate deploys a slight taper to the outline, which is great for both powder fields and fresh corduroy, but there’s plenty of tail still on hand for when you want to pop off a roller or ride switch. And that’s even with the notched tail, which would prefer a chance to sink into the deep stuff but is robust enough to get you airborne when called upon.

Moving to the front of the Soulmate, a subtle early-rise section in the camber makes edge changes on all surfaces butter-smooth. The nose is no bulldozer, but what it lacks in smash-through-crud qualities, it more than makes up for in its versatility. Again, we’re not a million miles away from a twin shape here. Having said that, you’ll get the best out of this if you embrace the directional elements. A variable sidecut, tightest at the nose but more mellow at the waist, makes moving through a true pleasure.

It really is a thing of beauty; one that even the simplistic one-colour topsheet – beige, no less – can’t disguise.

Construction and Materials:

Amplid is to be commended for its ‘Purist’ series of boards (to which the Amplid Soulmate belongs). Simply put, they feature a tech’ed down construction with clean and simple graphics to keep the cost down, and apply that menu to multiple shapes that can cater for a wide range of riders.

So what you won’t get here is any of the aerospace-grade miracle materials that crop up in more premium boards, both within the Amplid range and elsewhere. What you do get, however, is incredibly tried-and-tested materials that will back you all the way, whether it’s your first board or your fifteenth.

So we’re talking extruded base (not as fast as sintered, but durable and low maintenance); biax fibreglass (less responsive than triax or carbon weave, but malleable); and a full poplar core (simple, but sturdy). The construction of this won’t therefore get the tech nerds excited, but then that’s not at all what the Soulmate is about. If you’re still struggling on that one, the clue’s in the name…

Roundup:

The Amplid Soulmate is proof that even those pushing the boundaries on the technology front – and the crew at Amplid are certainly among their rank – can appreciate a pared-back, no-nonsense all-terrain-vehicle that deploys a fantastic shape to deliver a riding experience that delivers much more than what the spec sheet would suggest. Excitingly, the brand has also applied this approach to splitboards, reducing the notoriously high barrier to entry – but if it’s a daily driver you need, then the Amplid Soulmate is definitely one to consider.

Pros

The price! And the faith you can put in long-proven construction methods.

  • A versatile board that can do anything, but really excels in certain conditions.

Cons

  • About as far from the ‘bleeding edge’ of snowboard construction as you can get.

Tester Verdict

Jim Walker

“This is a lovely board to ride everywhere. Super smooth, fluid and agile edge-to-edge with great hold into deep carves, it’s perfect for hooning around in whatever conditions are thrown at you. It held up well on hard morning groomers, cut through the crud and afternoon slush and was an absolute dream in some late-season powder. There is enough pop to have some fun with it too. The only negative would be that it gets a little choppy over the bumps, but overall it was just loads of fun and made me smile.”
