The popularity of the coach’s jacket among snowboarders is easily explained; for some people – especially park rats – getting tooled up in the latest Gore-Tex is not only unnecessary, it’s downright lame. They prefer instead to keep things simple, wearing stuff that wouldn’t look out of place in the streets – like the Atrip Laki snowboard jacket.

The Atrip Laki jacket, like everything from Halldor Helgason’s outerwear brand, is brand new for 2016/17. With its collar and button detail, it definitely has that classic coach’s jacket look. Naturally, a coat of this kind will always be wanting in the waterproof/breathability stakes, but 5K/5K is fine for park laps and general resort riding over the majority of winter (NB: this only applies to jackets – with pants, we recommend going up to at least 10K/10K). A further boost in that department comes from the outer shell’s DWR (durable water repellant) treatment.

“It’s definitely most at home during or springtime slush-bashing, or handrail sessions at street level”

It’s definitely most at home during or springtime slush-bashing, or handrail sessions at street level. When the mercury rises, or the stairset hike is enough to fend off the chill, you can afford to prioritise comfort and style. This delivers both in spades, but at the same time it’s still undeniably a snowboarder’s creation. The buttons conceal a two-way zipper, and there are zips on the pockets too. There’s light insulation on both the torso and the sleeves, covered by a taffeta lining (the industry standard). There’s also a liftpass pocket on the sleeve.

Even if you already have a full-on winter jacket, at that price the Atrip Laki is worth picking up too. Once you’ve put it on, you won’t want to take it off – and because it’s definitely apres-friendly, you won’t have to.

Trade Secrets

It’s been spec’d up for riding, but the Laki Jacket still has the look of a normal coach’s jacket. We added a two-way zipper, so that you can have it zipped on top and open on the bottom to get that cholo style.

There’s a pocket for your phone, and zippers on the main pockets so you don’t lose all your stuff – something that often happens when riding in a regular coach’s jacket. The waterproofing and breathability is more than enough for the winter, as long as you’re not going camping in Alaska. I wear size Large, no big deal.
